English to Spanish: To the Living General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Poetry & Literature
Source text - English To The living, I am gone
To the sorrowful, I will never return.
To the angry, I was cheated.
But to the happy, I am at peace.
And to the faithful, I have never left.
I cannot be seen, but I can be heard
So as you stand upon a shore,
gazing at a beautiful sea - remember me.
As you look in awe at a mighty forest
an its grand majesty - remember me.
As you look upon a flower
and admire its simplicity - remember me.
Remember Me in your hearts, your thoughts and your memories of the times we loved, the times we cried,
the times we fought, the times we laughed.
For if you always think of me, I will never have gone.

English to Spanish: El Apartamento
Source text - English
It was quiet in the small apartment block. At this time of day most of the inhabitants would be out; even the retired couple from the top floor would have taken advantage of the better weather earlier and were probably shopping. The lights in the stairwell would come on automatically as soon as it became dark.
I am a retired language teacher having worked from 1975 till 2007.
My first job was at a boys' Comprehensive School where I prepared students for their GCSE 'O' Levels in Spanish and French and for their GCSE 'A' Level exams in Spanish Language and Literature. Their ages ranged from 13 to 18 years.
I later transferred to a Middle School where I taught all the subjects in the curriculum in addition to Spanish and English Language and Grammar. The pupils'ages ranged from 8 to 12 years.
My qualifications are as follows:
Spanish/French BA (Hons) Swansea University, Wales, UK. ( 1970-1974 )
.
PGCE Manchester University, Manchester, UK ( 1974-1975 ).
Thanks to my experience as a teacher, my work is accurate and grammatically correct. I feel confident in translating a wide range of topics except for anything in the field of medicine, law, business.
I like to research whatever topic I'm covering to get a feel for the text and aim to produce a well-written translation to the satisfaction of the customer.
The correction of pupils' work during my teaching years has given me plenty of practice in proofreading.
Being bilingual in English/Spanish helps me understand the nuances of both languages when translating.
Due to Gibraltar's geographical position I am very familiar with the Spanish way of life and customs. I enjoy literature and have read widely both in Spanish and English.
