Source text - Spanish La educación se ha convertido en la base de la productividad. Entramos al siglo XXI con una evidencia: el crecimiento económico depende de la calidad de la información y ésta de la calidad de la educación. El lugar privilegiado de la modernidad económica lo ocupan los creadores y productores de información, más que de productos de materiales. Cine, televisión, casetes, las industrias de la telecomunicación y las productoras de los instrumentos y equipos procesadores de información están hoy en el centro de la vida económica global. Los ricos de antaño producían acero (Carnegie, Krupp, Manchester). Los ricos de hogaño producen equipos electrónicos (Bill Gates, Sony, Silicon Valley). Esto es cierto y por eso hay que contrastarlo con los hechos. El abismo de la pobreza en los países del llamado tercer mundo se traduce en niveles decrecientes de educación. Hay 900 millones de adultos iletrados en el mundo, 130 millones de niños sin escuela y cien millones de niños que abandonan sus estudios en los grados primarios. Las naciones del Sur cuentan con el 60 por ciento de la población mundial de estudiantes pero con sólo el 12 por ciento del presupuesto mundial para la educación. En México, la tasa de escolaridad es de seis años y medio. En Argentina es de nueve y en Canadá es doce. En la secundaria y la preparatoria, sólo 28 de cada cien jóvenes entre los 16 y los 18 años reciben instrucción en México, y en las universidades, sólo el 14 por ciento de los jóvenes entre 19 y 24 años alcanza ese nivel educativo. Y en el posgrado, sólo el dos por ciento do los egresados de las universidades hace maestrías y un 0.1 por ciento doctorados. El tercer mundo sólo cuenta con el seis por ciento de los científicos mundiales. Entre este número, sólo el uno por ciento son latinoamericanos. El 95 por ciento de los científicos pertenecen al primer mundo.
El derecho a la educación, dice Nadine Gordimer, es un derecho humano tan esencial como el derecho al aire y al agua. El mundo gasta anualmente 800 mil millones de dólares en armamento pero no puede reunir los 6 millones al año necesarios para dar escuela a todos los niños del mundo en el año 2010. «Tan sólo uno por ciento de rebaja en gastos militares en el mundo sería suficiente para sentar frente a un pizarrón a todos los niños del mundo» (datos de la Unesco y el Banco Mundial). Un avión de caza para una fuerza aérea latinoamericana cuesta tanto como ochenta millones de libros escolares.

As we enter the 21st century, we see the proof of this in economic growth that is dependent on information quality, and information quality that is, in turn, dependent on education. The most privileged position in the modern marketplace does not belong to the producers of material goods, but the producers and creators of information. Film, television, cassettes, telecommunication industries and the producers of information processing equipment are at the center of the modern international economy. The wealthy of yesteryear were steel magnates (Carnegie, Krupp, Manchester). The wealthy of today’s world make electronic equipment (Bill Gates, Sony, Silicon Valley). This is a fact, which is supported by further facts: the depths of poverty in the so-called “third world” can be clearly seen in its descending levels of education. In the world today, there are 900 million adults who are illiterate, 130 million children who got without schooling, and 100 million more children who will abandon their studies before the end of grade school. The nations of the Global South make up 60 percent of the world’s students, yet only 12 percent of the global education budget. The average number of years a child in Mexico will attend school is six and a half. In Argentina, the average is nine, and in Canada, twelve. In middle and high school, just 28 out of every 100 young people between the ages of 16 and 18 will receive a formal education in Mexico, and only 14 percent of young people between 19 and 24 will reach the university level. At the graduate level, only two percent of college graduates will pursue a Master’s degree, and only 0.1 percent, a doctorate. The Majority World is responsible for only six percent of scientists worldwide. Among them, only one percent are Latin American. Meanwhile, 95 percent of the global science community comes from wealthy, industrialized nations.
The right to education, says Nadine Gordimer, is a human right as essential as the right to clean air and water. Globally, 800 billion dollars are spent every year on military defense, yet the xsix billion dollars it would take to educate every child in the world in 2010 cannot be found. “If worldwide military spending were reduced just 1 percent, it would be enough to put every child in the world in front of a blackboard.” (Data from UNESCO and World Bank.) The cost of a fighter aircraft for a Latin American Air Force is the equivalent of 80 million textbooks.

Source text - English Ed Schmidt lied to me.
At least, I think he did. To be perfectly honest, I can’t really say what was fact and what was fiction in his subversive little performance, My Last Play, which I saw last Friday.
A little background, for those who may not have heard of the show: Ed Schmidt is a playwright who has enjoyed a solidly mediocre career, and, at age 48 (the same year, he points out, that Shakespeare put away his pen), he’s reached a personal crisis. After the loss of his father, Schmidt turned to theater for comfort, and read Our Town, his favorite play. But in his sorrow, he found he was uncomforted by Thornton Wilder’s words. And if, as he put it, in his hour of greatest need the greatest play he had ever read meant nothing to him, then what was the point of the rest of it?
So now Schmidt has decided to give up playwriting for good. He’s also getting rid of his 2,000-plus collection of plays and books about the theater. But not without one last stab at it: he’s written a play, aptly entitled My Last Play, which he performs in his living room. During the play, he invites each member of the audience to choose a book from his library, which he or she may leave with. When the books are gone, so will be Ed Schmidt’s playwriting career.

Ó... digo… eso creo. La verdad es que no puedo decir con confianza cuál era verdad y cuál era pura ficción de su obra de teatro subversiva, Mi obra final, la cual vi el viernes pasado.
Un poco de contexto, para los (muchos, seguro) que no conocen al Sr. Schmidt ni su obra: Ed Schmidt es un dramaturgo quien ha tenido una trayectoria profesional sumamente mediocre. Y ahora, a los 48 años (misma edad que tenía Shakespeare, nos dice, cuando él también abandanó la dramaturgia) ha llegado a una crisis en su vida. Después de la muerte de su padre, Schmidt leyó de nuevo su obra de teatro favorita: Our Town por Thornton Wilder. Pero descubrió que en su dolor, las palabras de Wilder no lo consolaban. Y entonces pensó que si la mejor obra que jamás había leído no le pudo ayudar en su hora más necesitada… entonces, ¿qué caso tenía todo el demás?
Así que Schmidt decidió dejar su vocación. Y por encima, se está regalando su colección de más de 2,000 libros sobre el teatro.
