Paralegal are people with some legal training, but who are not fully professionally qualified as either barristers or solicitors. Some paralegals (e.g. licensed conveyancers) are of relatively recent creation. The longest established form of paralegal is the legal executive. Legal executives perform professional work under the guidance of a solicitor, tending to specialize in particular areas of law. Their governing body is the Institute of Legal Executives. Once qualified, they are entitled to undertake the law society training programme and qualify as a solicitor. Legal executives are also required to undertake an ongoing programme of Continuing Professional Development.
