Source text - English There are many specialized careers available to today 's aviation
maintenance technician. As with any technical career,
each career path has associated with it activities that can
subject the technician and others to varying degrees of harm
if performed without care. This chapter is intended to help
the aviation maintenance technician identify potentially
hazardous materials and ways in which the potential for
harm can be minimized.
Today there are tens of thousands of products used in industry,
with more being developed each day. Numerous
governmental agencies (and, therefore, hundreds of governmental
regulations) control the development, safety requirements,
and health and environmental issues related to these
products. Key among these agencies are the Consumer
Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the Food and Drug
Administration (FDA), the Department of Transportation
(DOT), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and
the Occupational Safety and Health Administration
(OSHA). Although all these agencies have some effects that
may be felt in the aviation industry, the primary impact results
from the last three organizations mentioned.
Some Federal Air Regulations (F ARs) refer to the DOT
standards in their text and use -these standards as the criteria
with which the aviation industry must comply. In addition,
as users of potentially dangerous chemicals, the aviation industry
must comply with both the regulations of the EPA as
they relate to environmental concerns, and OSHA as their
usage relates to the safety and health of its employees.
Since the aviation industry is by its nature predominantly
interstate commerce, most businesses in the aviation industry
are subject to federal regulations. In addition, most state
and some local governments have also passed safety and environmental
related legislation that parallels or supplements
federal legislation. As a result, the regulations associated
with each are quite similar. Regardless of which jurisdiction
applies to the operations of the aviation business, the operation
must comply with some type of hazardous-materials
regulation. In some instances, more than one jurisdiction
may control the operations of the business.
Because of the vast mess of this subject area and the general
duplication of regulations between federal, state, and
local governments, discussions in this chapter are limited to
federal regulations and generic handling of hazardous materials.
In addition to the information found in this chapter, in
later chapters the aviation maintenance technician will fmd
more safety data related to the specific types of equipment
and/or processes as they are discussed throughout the text.
The aviation maintenance technician frequently must work
in potentially dangerous environments. In many cases, particularly
when dealing with hazardous materials, the technician
may not easily recognize those hazards. Some of these
dangerous environments may be caused directly by the materials
with which the aviation maintenance technician must
work. In addition, exposures may be caused by other activities
occurring in the area that are not directly related to the
technician's activities.
Hazardous materials are typically grouped into three categories:
chemical agents, and physical and biological hazards.
Chemical Agents
Within the chemical agents category, four (4) classes exist.

systems headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota, has trademarked
the acronym FACTORTM to help remember the
classes of chemical agents. Much of the information in this
chapter comes from and is included in their programs. Because
each class of chemical agent requires different usage,
handling, and storage techniques, it is important that the aviation
maintenance technician be able to recall and identify
each of these classes. FACTORTM stands for
Flammable
And
Corrosive
Toxic
Or
Reactive
The two outside letters of the acronym FACfOR, F and R
(flammable and reactive), become hazardous primarily after
some outside event, condition, or substance interacts with
them. For example, the necessary components for a fire to
occur are fuel, oxygen, and heat In that relationship, flammables
are the fuel, and heat and oxygen are the outside agents.
Reactives, when combined with certain other materials, are
capable of generating heat and/or gases, causing an explosion.
The inside letters of the acronym, C and T (corrosives and
toxins), on the other hand, act directly on the human body
when exposure occurs. Exposing the skin, eyes, and other
mucous membranes (such as the nose) to these elements can
cause .varying degrees of harm. Toxic agents cause poisoning.
Aviation maintenance technicians should be particularly
concerned when using toxic agents, because the ultimate effects
of toxic poisoning are frequently delayed. It may take
weeks, months, or even years for the poisoning to become apparent; because the toxic poisons are capable of using the
bloodstream to move through the body, the cause-and-effect
relationship may not be easily recognized.
As a general rule, when working with flammable and reactive
agents, to avoid hazardous situations the aviation
maintenance technician first needs to be concerned with exposing
the agents to outside materials and conditions. Personal
exposure to corrosive and toxic agents is the primary
concern when dealing with toxins and corrosives. Therefore,
the personal safety equipment used with corrosive and
toxic agents should be designed to limit contact and/or exposure.
Personal safety equipment designed for use with
flammable and reactive materials is designed to limit heat
exposure or impact, such as flying objects in the case of an
explosion. In all cases, the recommended safety equipment
recommended by the agent manufacturer, the employer, or
the instructor should a! ways be used.
Table 1-1 is a partial listing of frequently used chemical
agents found in the aerospace industty. The aviation maintenance
technician should be aware of the labels on the materials
found in the work area and read them carefully.
Flammables (and Combustibles)
Flammables are materials that may easily ignite in the presence
of a catalyst such as heat, sparks, or flame. They may
be in any of the three physical forms: solid, liquid, or gas.
Combustible liquids are very similar to flammable liquids,
but they are not as easy to ignite.
Frequently found flammable or combustible materials
in the aviation industty include fuels, paint-related products,
alcohols, acetone, toluene, and some meta/filings.

En suma, como usuarios de químicos potencialmente peligrosos, la industria de la aviación debe cumplir con ambas regulaciones: los de la EPA refiriéndose con lo que concierne con el ambiente; y la OSHA cuyos usos se relacionan con la salud y la seguridad de sus empleados. Desde que la industria aeronáutica es, por su naturaleza predominantemente un comercio interestatal, la mayoría de los negocios en la industria aeronáutica son sujetos a regulaciones federales. Adicionalmente, la mayoría de los estados y algunos gobiernos locales también han pasado legislaciones relacionadas a seguridad y ambiente que son suplementos o paralelos a la legislación federal. En suma para la información encontrada en este capítulo, en los últimos capítulos el técnico de mantenimiento aeronáutico encontrará más datos de seguridad relacionados con los tipos específicos de equipos y/o procesos como se discuten a lo largo del texto
El técnico de mantenimiento aeronáutico frecuentemente debe trabajar en ambientes potencialmente peligrosos. En muchos casos, particularmente cuando se trabaja con materiales peligrosos, el técnico no puede reconocer esos peligros fácilmente. Algunas de esos ambientes peligros pueden ser causados directamente por los materiales con los cuales el técnico de mantenimiento aeronáutico debe trabajar. En suma, las exposiciones pueden causarse por otras actividades hechas en el área que no están relacionadas directamente con las actividades del técnico. Los materiales peligrosos son típicamente agrupados en tres categorías: agentes químicos, peligros físicos y peligros biológicos.
Agentes Químicos

Las dos letras a los bordes Del acrónimo FactoR, F y R (inflamable y reactiva), se convierte primordialmente peligrosos después de algunos eventos externos, condiciones, o sustancias que interactúan con ellos. Por ejemplo, los componentes necesarios para que ocurra fuego son combustible, oxigenos y calor. En esta relación, los inflamables son los combustibles; el calor y el oxigeno son agentes externos. Los reactivos, cuando se convinan con otros ciertos materiales, son capaces de generar calor y/o gases, que causan explosión.
Por otro lado, las letras C y T dentro del acrónimo (corrosivo y toxico) actúan directamente sobre el cuerpo humano cuando se expone. La exposición de la piel, ojos y otras membranas mucosas (como la nariz) a esos elementos pueden causar vario grados de lesiones. Los agentes toxicos causan envenenamiento.
Los tenicos de mantimiento aeronáutico deberían ser advertidos particularmente cuando se usan agentes toxicos por causa de los efectos fatales de envenenamiento toxico que frecuentemente son retardados. Puede tomarse semanas, meses o incluso años para que el envenenamiento sea aparente. Porque los venenos tóxicos son capaces de emplear el torrente sanguíneo para moverse a través del cuerpo, la relación causa-efecto no se puede reconocer fácilmente.
Como una regla general, cuando se trabaja con agentes inflamables y reactivos, la evitar las situaciones peligrosas, el técnico de mantenimiento aeronáutico primero necesita estar concienticen con exponer los agentes a condiciones y materiales fuera del entorno. La exposición personal a corrosivos y agentes toxicos es el tema primario cuando se maneja con toxicos y corrosivos. Consecuentemente, el equipo de seguridad personal empleado con agentes corrosivos y toxicos deben diseñarse para limitar el contacto y/o la exposición.
El equipo de seguridad personal diseñado para el uso con materiales inflamables y reactivos se diseñan para limitar el la exposición o el impacto del calor, tales como objetos voladores en el case de un explosión. En todos los casos, debería usarse siempre el equipo de seguridad recomendada por el agente manufacturador, el empleador o el instructor.
La Tabla 1-1 es una lista parcial de agentes químicos usados frecuentemente, que se consiguen en la industria aeronáutica. El técnico de mantenimiento aeronáutico debería esta pendiente de los marcal de los materiales que se encuentran en el area de trabajo y leerlos cuidadosamente. Inflamables )y combustibles)
Inflamables son materiales que fácilmente puede incendiarse en la presencia de una catalizador como calor, chispa o fuego. Ellos pueden ser en algunas de las tres formas físicas de materia: solida, liquida o gaseosa.
Los combustibles son liquidos que son muy similares a los liquidos inflamables, pero no son fáciles de préndense. Frecuentemente los inflamables encontrdor o los materiales combustibles en la industria de la aviación incluyen: gasolina, productos relacionados con pinturas, alcohol, acetonas, toluenos y algunos metales/rellenos.

Source text - English A navigational aid (also known as aid to navigation, ATON, or NAVAID) is any sort of marker which aids the traveler in navigation; the term is most commonly used to refer to nautical or aviation travel. Common types of such aids include lighthouses, buoys, fog signals, and day beacons.
According to the glossary of terms in the United States Coast Guard Light list, an Aid to Navigation is any device external to a vessel or aircraft specifically intended to assist navigators in determining their position or safe course, or to warn them of dangers or obstructions to navigation.
TYPES OF NAVIGATION AIDS
Radio electrical signals generally generated from ground installations (airport, aerodrome, and heliport) which are received for any type or aircraft such as fixed-wing and rotor-wing aircrafts to allow them to have a guidance during a flight .
VOR
A navigational aid, or radio navigation system based on the ground to help the pilot establish the bearings of the aircraft. The VOR ground station broadcasts a VHF radio composite signal including the station‟s identifier, voice (if equipped), and navigational system. The VOR encodes information from the station as the phase of a reference and a variable signal. The pilot can set VOR receiver to selected ground station or another word is to select a radial to define a magnetic course toward or away from VOR station on receiver. The Radial of the VOR receiver is divided into 360 degrees, at the point 360 is representing Magnetic North . in addition, 090 that means on the East and 270 means on the West . When the aircraft has gone half way or close to next VOR station and VOR receiver got that signals from next station . If the aircraft out of transmitter range or VOR station not operates, the VOR receiver will show red flag or indication to tell pilot that don't misunderstand because CDI needle will stay at center all the time.
ILS (INSTRUMENTAL LANDING SYSTaEM)
Aids for an instrumental landing approach to an airfield, consisting of a localizer, glide slope, marker beacons and approach light. The instrumental landing system provides both horizontal and vertical guidance to aircraft approaching a runway using a combination of radio signals and, in many cases, high intensity lighting arrays to enable a safe landing during instrument meteorological conditions (IMC), such as ceiling, or reduce visibility (limited visibility on Venezuelan content) due to fog, rain, or blowing snow (this one is absent in Venezuela). Its abbreviation is ILS. In addition, there are three categories of ILS present at SVMI (CAT I, CAT II, and CAT III).
DME (DISTANCE MEDIA EQUIPMENT)
This is an airborne secondary radar whose signal is converted into distance. It is quite common to find a VOR together with a DME to give simultaneous bearing and range from the same point to the ground. This radio aid is generally installed in a VOR station. The DME converts the signals into distance and also calculate ground speed and the time necessary to reach the station
Translation - Spanish Una ayuda de navegación - radioayudas (también conocida como ayuda para la navegación aérea, ATON, NAVAID) es un tipo de marcador la cual ayuda al viajero en su navegación; el termino se usa comunmente para referirse a los viajes maritimos y aéreos.. Tipos comunes de tales ayudas son faros, las boyas, señales de humo, y balizas.
De acuerdo al glosario de terminos en la lista de Guarda Costas de los Estados Unidos, una Ayuda para la Navegación es algun dispositivo externo a una embacación o o avión especificamente diseñado para asistir a los navegantes determinar sus posiciones y rumbo seguro, o para prevenir les de los peligros u obstrucciones en la navegación.
TIPOS DE RADIOAYUDAS
Las señales radioelectricas se generan generalmente desde las instalacion en tierra (aeropuertos, aeródromos y helipuerto) las cuales son recibidas por algun tipo de aeronave tales como los de ala fija y alas rotatorias para permitirles tener una guia durante el vuelo.
El VOR
Una radioayuda o sistema de radio-navegación basado en tierra para ayudar a que el piloto establezca las guías del avión. El la estación del VOR trasmite un radio de alta frecuencia (VHF) de señales compuesta incluyendo el identificador de la estación, voz grabada (is cuenta con eso), y sistemas de navegación. El VOR codifica la información desde la estación como la fase de una referencia y una señal variable. El piloto establece la frecuencia VOR para seleccionar la estación en tierra, en otras palabras, es para seleccionar un radial para definir un curso magnetico hacia o desde la estación VOR en frecuencia. El Radial de la frecuencia se divide en 360 grados, y el punto 360 representa el Norte Magnetico, en suman 090 que represente el Este y 270 representa el Oeste. Cuando el avión se ha ido o acercado en la ruta la próxima estación VOR y la frecuencia recibe esa señal de la próxima estación. Si el avión esta fuera del rango del transmisor o la estación VOR no funciona, el la frecuencia del VOR recibirá mostrará una bandera roja o indicación para decirle al piloto que no lo mal interprete porque la aguja estará en el centro todo el tiempo.
SAI (Sistema de Aterrrizaje por Intrumentación)
Las ayudas para una aproximación de aterrizaje intrumental a un campo aereo (parque aéreo), consistiendo de un localizador, sendas de planeo, marcadores de balizas y luces de aproximación. El sistema de aterrizaje instrumental provee guias verticales y horizontales a la aeronave que accesa a la pista de atterizaje usando una combinacion de radio-señales y, en muchos casos, luces de alta intensidad para permitir un aterrizaje seguro durante las condiciones metereologicas, tales como nubes a baja altura, visibilidad reducida (vision limitada en el contexto Venezolano) debido a neblinas, lluvia, nevadas ventosas (esta ultima ausente en Venezuela). Su abreviatura - en inglés- es ILS. En suma, hay tres categorias de ILS presentes en el SVMI (Aeropuerto Internacional de Maiquetia Simon Bolivar) el CAT I, CATII y CAT III.
DME (Equipos de Medición de Distancia)
Este es un rada secundario para los aviones en pleno vuelo a los cuales la señal se convierte en distancia. Es muy comun conseguir un VOR junto con un DME para dar direcciones simultaneas desde el mismo punto a tierra. La radioayuda se instala generalmente en una estación VOR. El DME convierte las señales en distacia y también calcula la velocidad en tierra y el tiempo necesario para alcanzar la estación.

Back in Venezuela in 2009, I began to work as a Teacher of English related to Aeronautic, Aviation, and Space where I have learnt some vocabularies due to I teach to higher level students. First of all at the Bolivarian Military Aviation School for one year, and then at the Civil Aeronautic College (http://www.iuac.inac.gob.ve/). Furthermore, I have had the experience of teaching intermediate and advanced English to students of Air Traffic Control, Aeronautical Station Operation, Aeronautical Information Systems, Search and Rescue, Aeronautical Maintenance Technics; using conversational books of English as well as Aviation English intended for Pilots, Air Traffic Controllers, and Flight Attendants.
Being at the IUAC, I have gotten the ICAO Linguistic Proficiency Rating Certification in order to rate Piltos, ATCs, ASOs, and Flight Attendants' level of English taking into consideration the Oral Production and Listening Comprehension.
In addition, I love languages in general. I speak some German - I learnt it before I went to study English at the faculty. I have learnt Norwegian autodidactically, and as well as taking a Brazilian Portuguese course.
