On April 26, 1956, a crane lifted fifty-eight aluminum truck bodies aboard an aging tanker ship moored in Newark, New Jersey. Five days later, the Ideal-X sailed into Houston, where fifty-eight trucks waited to take on the metal boxes and haul them to their destinations. Such was the beginning of a revolution.

Decades later, when enormous trailer trucks rule the highways and trains hauling nothing but stacks of boxes rumble through the night, it is hard to fathom just how much the container has changed the world. In 1956, China was not the world's workshop. It was not routine for shoppers to find Brazilian shoes and Mexican vacuum cleaners in stores in the middle of Kansas. Japanese families did not eat beef from cattle raised in Wyoming, and French clothing designers did not have their exclusive apparel cut and sewn in Turkey or Vietnam. Before the container, transporting goods was expensive - so expensive that it did not pay to ship many things halfway across the country, much less halfway around the world.

What is it about the container that is so important? Surely not the thing itself. A soulless aluminum or steel box held together with welds and rivets, with a wooden floor and two enormous doors at one end: the standard container has all the romance of a tin can. The value of this utilitarian object lies not in what it is, but in how it is used. The container is at the core of a highly automated system for moving goods from anywhere, to anywhere, with a minimum of cost and complication on the way.

The container made shipping cheap, and by doing so changed the shape of the world economy. The armies of ill-paid, ill-treated workers who once made their livings loading and unloading ships in every port are no more, their tight-knit waterfront communities now just memories. Cities that had been centers of maritime commerce for centuries, such as New York and Liverpool, saw their waterfronts decline with startling speed, unsuited to the container trade or simply unneeded, and the manufacturers that endured high costs and antiquated urban plants in order to be near their suppliers and their customers have long since moved away.

Venerable ship lines with century-old pedigrees were crushed by the enormous cost of adapting to container shipping. Merchant mariners, who had shipped out to see the world, had their traditional days-long shore leave in exotic harbors replaced by a few hours ashore at a remote parking lot for containers, their vessel ready to weigh anchor the instant the high-speed cranes finished putting huge metal boxes off and on the ship.

Even as it helped destroy the old economy, the container helped build a new one. Sleepy harbors such as Busan and Seattle moved into the front ranks of the world's ports, and massive new ports were built in places like Felixstowe, in England, and Tanjung Pelepas, in Malaysia, where none had been before. Small towns, distant from the great population centers, could take advantage of their cheap land and low wages to entice factories freed from the need to be near a port to enjoy cheap transportation.

Sprawling industrial complexes (where armies of thousands manufactured products from start to finish gave way to smaller, more specialized plants that shipped components and half-finished goods to one another in ever lengthening supply chains. Poor countries, desperate to climb the rungs of the ladder of economic development, could realistically dream of becoming suppliers to wealthy countries far away.

1956년 4월 26일, 크레인이 뉴저지주 뉴어크시 부두에 정박해있던 낡은 대형선박에 트럭 적재함 58개를 실었다. 닷새 후 도착한 휴스턴항에는 알루미늄 박스를 목적지로 운반할 빈 트럭 58대가 선박이 입항하길 기다리고 있었다. 운송업계의 혁명은 그렇게 시작되었다.

반세기가량이 지난 오늘날, 고속도로를 가득 메운 대형 화물차 행렬이나 컨테이너 화물만 잔뜩 싣고 달리는 야간기차의 소음은 일상이 되었다. 컨테이너가 세계를 이렇게 바꿔놓을 줄 누가 상상이나 했을까? 최초의 컨테이너선이 등장했던 1956년에만 하더라도 어느 나라를 가든 중국산 제품을 볼 수 있는 건 아니었다. 혹은 미국 캔자스 시내 한복판에서 브라질제 신발과 멕시코제 진공청소기를 구입한다거나, 일본인 가족의 저녁 식탁에 미국산 소고기가 올라오는 모습은 생각할 수 없었다. 프랑스 디자이너의 명품 의류를 터키나 베트남 직공들이 재단하고 바느질한다는 건 더욱 말도 안됐다. 컨테이너가 도입되기 전에는 운송료가 너무 비싸서, 지구 반 바퀴는 커녕 한 나라의 절반을 가로질러 운송해도 수익이 나지 않았다.

그렇다면 컨테이너의 어떤 면이 그토록 획기적이었단 말인가? 이 지극히 평범한 외관에 비밀이 숨어있을 것 같진 않다. 보통 컨테이너는 알루미늄판 혹은 철판을 용접하거나 못을 박아서 육면체로 접합하고 나무 바닥을 깐 후 한쪽 귀퉁이에 거대한 문 두 개를 다는 게 전부니까 말이다. 빈 깡통에 다름없는 컨테이너의 진가는 바로 외부가 아닌 내부에서 나온다. 무엇이냐가 아닌 어떻게 쓰이냐에 따라 효용성이 결정되는 것이다. 컨테이너는 어디에서 어디로 물건을 이송하든 최저 비용과 단순한 과정을 보장하면서, 고도로 자동화된 운송 체계의 핵심이 되었다.

컨테이너 덕분에 해상운송비가 절감했고 세계 경제사는 새로운 국면에 들어섰다. 생계를 위해 낮은 보수를 받고 열악한 환경에서 하역업을 하던 인부들 무리와 해안가를 따라 형성되었던 지역사회는 부둣가에서 자취를 감췄다. 몇 세기 동안 해운산업을 이끌던 뉴욕과 리버풀 같은 국제 항구도시들의 위상은 컨테이너 중심 교역에 맞지 않거나 무용해졌다는 이유로 빠르게 쇠퇴했다. 비싼 임대료와 낙후된 시설을 감내하고서라도 공급자나 소비자와 가까운 지대에 공장을 세워야 했던 제조기업의 남모를 속사정도 이제는 추억이 되었다.

백 년의 역사를 자랑하던 선박회사들은 전체 시스템을 컨테이너에 맞게 조정해야하는 상황에 놓였고, 결국 막대한 비용을 감당하지 못해 하나둘씩 역사의 뒤안길로 사라졌다. 물건을 이송하러 국외로 나갈 때면 일을 마치고 이국적인 항구를 도피처삼아 여유를 즐겼던 뱃사람들의 향유도 옛말이 되었다. 며칠간 주어졌던 상륙허가가 몇 시간으로 줄어들면서, 해안가에서 꽤나 떨어진 보관 지역에 거대한 컨테이너를 싣고 내리기가 무섭게 출항할 준비를 끝내야 하기 때문이다.

컨테이너 중심 교역은 과거의 경제체제를 무너뜨렸을 뿐 아니라 새로운 경제를 창출하는데도 일조했다. 잠자는 항구였던 부산항과 시애틀항은 단숨에 세계 주요 항구로 성장했고, 영국의 펠릭스토우나 말리이시아의 탄중펠레파스 같은 도시에도 거대한 선착장이 새로 들어섰다. 또한 저렴한 운송료 덕분에 항구에 머물 이유가 없어진 공장지대는 인구밀집지역에서 떨어져있지만 값싼 땅값과 노동력을 자랑하는 소도시들로 하나둘씩 거처를 옮겨갔다.

수천 개의 공장이 모여 전 생산과정을 담당하던 대규모 공업단지는 유래 없이 분업화된 공급망 때문에 세계 곳곳으로 분산되었다. 이제 부속품이나 반제품을 납품하는, 보다 세분화되고 전문화된 소규모 공장들이 제조업 대부분을 담당하고 있다. 덕분에 개발도상국은 멀리 떨어진 선진국에 물건을 공급할 수 있게 되면서 경제성장의 꿈에 한 발짝 다가갔다.
