Source text - English The gas engine interested me and I followed its progress, but only from curiosity, until about 1885 or 1886 when, the steam engine being discarded as the motive power for the carriage that I intended some day to build, I had to look around for another sort of motive power. In 1885 I repaired an Otto engine at the Eagle Iron Works in Detroit. No one in town knew anything about them.

Source text - Portuguese Resumo: A sátira em narrativas literárias brasileiras parece evidenciar uma dialética entre requinte e simplicidade no campo estético que figura uma andamento contraditório da nação brasileira. É com essa perspectiva que se busca entender como Memórias póstumas de Brás Cubas, de Machado de Assis, e Recordações do escrivão Isaías Caminha, de Lima Barreto, representam tendências essenciais do homem moderno brasileiro e como os escritores partem de escolhas estéticas próximas ao mesmo tempo em que parecem concretizar, de modo diverso, uma composição satírica particular, por meio da construção do destino de seus narradores-protagonistas. Nesse âmbito, a formação e a construção dos personagens centrais bem como seus momentos de delírio transparecem, na semelhança de enredo das narrativas, as diferenças dos métodos compositivos dos autores que, apesar de se encontrarem no compromisso de figurar a vida em sua essência, lidam, em momentos distintos, com um movimento histórico desigual. A base de pesquisa é o referencial teórico-crítico acerca dos escritores escolhidos, da formação da nossa literatura e da perspectiva realista de Gyorgy Lukács. Assim sendo, acredita-se que é pelo debate entre essência e aparência, forma e conteúdo nos romances escolhidos no que tange a sátira que se pode pensar as contradições do país de modo profundo e verdadeiro.

Translation - English Abstract: The satire in Brazilian literary narratives seems to substantiate a dialectic between refinement and simplicity in the aesthetic field that portray a contradictory course of the Brazilian nation. With this perspective we seek to understand how Memórias póstumas de Brás Cubas, by Machado de Assis, and Recordações do escrivão Isaías Caminha, by Lima Barreto, represents essential trends of modern Brazilian men and how the writers start from similar aesthetic choices at the same time that they seems to concretize, in a diverse manner, a particular satiric layout, by the means of the development of their protagonist-narrator’s fate. Within this scope, the formation and the construction of central characters as well as its moments of delirium shine through, in the storyline similarity among the narratives, the differences between authors’ compositional methods which, despite being committed to portray life in its essence, cope with, in distinct moments, with an unequal historical movement. The research base is the critical and theoretical framework concerning the chosen writers, about the foundation of our literature and from the realistic perspective of Gyorgy Lukács. Therefore, it is believed that is by the debate about essence and appearance, form and content in the chosen novel regarding satire that we can think about the country’s contradictions in a deep and true way.

Source text - English Apraxia of speech (AOS)—also known as acquired apraxia
of speech, verbal apraxia, or childhood apraxia of speech
(CAS) when diagnosed in children—is a speech sound
disorder. Someone with AOS has trouble saying what
he or she wants to say correctly and consistently. AOS is
a neurological disorder that affects the brain pathways
involved in planning the sequence of movements involved
in producing speech. The brain knows what it wants to
say, but cannot properly plan and sequence the required
speech sound movements.
AOS is not caused by weakness or paralysis of the
speech muscles (the muscles of the jaw, tongue, or lips).
Weakness or paralysis of the speech muscles results in
a separate speech disorder, known as dysarthria. Some
people have both dysarthria and AOS, which can make
diagnosis of the two conditions more difficult.
The severity of AOS varies from person to person. It
can be so mild that it causes trouble with only a few
speech sounds or with pronunciation of words that
have many syllables. In the most severe cases, someone
with AOS might not be able to communicate effectively
by speaking, and may need the help of alternative
communication methods.
Translation - Portuguese Apraxia da fala (AF)—também conhecida como apraxia da fala
adquirida, apraxia verbal ou apraxia da fala na infância (AFI)
quando diagnosticada na infância—é um distúrbio do som da fala.
Uma pessoa com AF tem dificuldade para dizer o que
ele ou ela quer dizer corretamente e consistentemente. A AF
é um distúrbio neurológico que afeta as vias cerebrais
envolvidas no planejamento da sequência de movimentos
envolvidos na produção da fala. O cérebro sabe o que quer
dizer, mas não consegue planejar adequadamente e
sequenciar os movimentos necessários para o som da fala.
A AF não é causada por fraqueza ou paralisia dos músculos da
fala (os músculos da mandíbula, língua ou lábios). A fraqueza ou
paralisia da fala resulta em um distúrbio da fala distinto,
conhecido como disartria. Algumas pessoas têm os dois disartria
e AF, o que pode tornar o diagnóstico das duas condições mais
difícil.
A severidade da AF varia de pessoa para pessoa. Ela pode
ser tão branda que cause problemas em apenas alguns
poucos sons da fala ou com a pronúncia de palavras que
tenham muitas sílabas. Na maioria dos casos severos,
alguém com AF pode não ser capaz de se comunicar
efetivamente falando e pode precisar da ajuda de métodos
alternativos de comunicação.
