| Definition / notes: | The male equivalent of the ovum, produced in vast numbers by the testis. A sperm cell has a head containing the nucleus with half the normal number of chromosomes. Attached to the head is a tail, which propels the sperm towards the ovum. Only one sperm head penetrates the ovum wall and fertilizes the ovum, after which development of the egg commences. |
