Source text - English ... It was the sheer improbability of it all that made it such a
delight. I had noticed a reference to the Treno Museo at the station at
Villarosa, a small town slap bang in the middle of Sicily, and with it
the briefest of mentions of a cafe that served traditional Sicilian
dishes. It didn't seem a lot to go on, but when, quite by accident, I
saw it signposted as I was zooming along on my Vespa, I decided to drop
in.
The station seemed completely deserted. Of the promised museum I could
only find a few yellowing brochures pinned up on a notice board, but,
exploring further, I came across two men seated at one of four plastic
tables on the platform of the station.
'Any chance of something to eat?' I asked, expecting them to
say no.
'Certainly,' said one. 'Where do you want to eat? Inside,' and he
gestured vaguely down the platform. 'Or here?'
'Well, here, I think,' I said, and sat down at one of the plastic
tables right on the platform.
He produced a paper tablecloth, a couple of glasses, and a knife, fork
and spoon.
'What would you like? Antipasto typical from around here - salami,
cheese, olives?'
'Very nice,' I said.
'And then for primo piatto there's spaghetti alla carbonara or penne
with salsa di pomodoro, salsiccie e ulive.'
'Oh, that one. The second. More Sicilian,' I said.
He agreed that it was more Sicilian.
'And then some meat?'
'With a salad?' I said.
'With a salad. And to drink, wine and water?'
'A quarter of red,' I said, 'and water.'
Translation - Italian ... È stata l’assoluta inverosimiglianza dell’intera faccenda a
renderla così gradevole. Avevo trovato un accenno al Treno Museo della
stazione di Villarosa, un paesino nel centro esatto della Sicilia, e
con esso una brevissima nota su un caffè che serviva piatti della
cucina tradizionale siciliana. Non sembrava che ci fosse molto per
giustificare una visita. Però quando quasi per caso ne scorsi l’
insegna, mentre accelleravo sulla mia Vespa, decisi di darci un’
occhiata.
La stazione sembrava completamente deserta. Del suddetto museo trovai
solo qualche foglietto illustrativo che ingialliva appuntato ad una
bacheca. Ma facendo un giro lì intorno mi imbattei in due uomini
seduti ad un tavolino di plastica sul binario della stazione.
“Per caso si potrebbe mangiare qualcosa?” chiesi, aspettandomi una
risposta negativa.
“Sicuro,” rispose uno dei due. “Dove vuole mangiare, dentro” e fece
un gesto vago verso il binario, “o qui?”
“Qui va bene,” e mi sedetti ad uno dei tavolini di plastica.
L’uomo portò una tovaglia di carta, un paio di bicchieri e le posate.
“Cosa vuole mangiare? Antipasto tipico di queste parti, salame,
formaggio e olive?”
“Molto bene” risposi.
“E per primo ci sono spaghetti alla carbonara o penne con salsa di
pomodoro, salsiccia e olive”.
“Questo, il secondo. Più siciliano”.
L’uomo confermò che era più siciliano.
“E poi carne?”
“Con l’insalata?” chiesi io.
“Con un’insalata. E da bere, vino e acqua?”

Source text - English Ora, se alzate lo sguardo, potete ammirare il grandioso soffitto a volta.
Gli archi che vedete intersecarsi con tanta grazia sono una caratteristica dell’architettura gotica del 1300, periodo in cui questo edificio venne progettato. La riscoperta dell’arco, usato nell’antichità, rese possibile la creazione di queste forme maestose: grazie alla nuova tecnologia difatti le chiese poterono innalzarsi ad altezze fino ad allora mai viste. Il soffitto è di colore chiaro per riflettere la luce, ma in passato era blu notte, tempestato di stelle, a simboleggiare il cielo che sovrasta i fedeli.
È facile immaginare con che riverenza i fedeli si sarebbero avvicinati a questa cattedrale ariosa anche se di dimensioni non vaste: questo è lo scenario sontuoso di incoronazioni e di esequie regali.
Alla destra dell’altare è un trono dorato che potete osservare da vicino.
Questo scanno riccamente adorno è il trono dei vescovi di Cracovia. Le figure imponenti che lo sovrastano sono quelle dei Santi Pietro e Paolo, come confermano i loro simboli.
Il figlio prediletto della città, Papa Giovanni Paolo II, fu arcivescovo ed in seguito cardinale di Cracovia. Su questo trono sedette dal 1964 al 1978, anno in cui venne eletto pontefice, il primo papa polacco di tutti i tempi.
Incamminatevi verso la sinistra dell’altare principale ... e varcate il portale adorno di marmi di colore chiaro e scuro.
Attraversato il portale, di fronte a destra, trovate il passaggio che conduce alla torre campanaria. L’ingresso è contrassegnato da un’insegna, “Torre campanaria Sigismondo” (Sigismund Bell Tower) . Nel caso non vi riuscisse di scorgere l’entrata alla torre campanaria, controllate la mappa.
A questo punto attraversate l’ingresso, premete PAUSA sul vostro apparecchio, e salite le scale di legno. Ci risentiamo quando avete raggiunto la cima delle scale.

These graceful intersecting arches are so characteristic of Gothic architecture of the 1300’s when this building was designed. The rediscovery of the ancient arch freed men to create these majestic shapes – the new technology lifting it higher than churches had ever been before. The ceiling is now painted to reflect the light, but in earlier times it was a characteristic deep blue and studded with stars to reflect heaven above the faithful.
You can see how the small, yet airy Cathedral would have inspired awe and what a dazzling sight it would have been for a King’s Coronation or Funeral. Please walk over to the golden throne just to the right of the altar.
This is the elaborately decorated throne of the bishops of Krakow. You can see the large figures of Saints Peter and Paul with their distinctive symbols.
Krakow’s favorite son, Pope John Paul II, was for many years the archbishop of the city and later Cardinal, as well. This is where he sat from 1964 until 1978 when he was elected Pope, the first Polish Pope in history.

Eurordis Contribution to a Commission Discussion Document

Eurordis focused on key objectives and proposals in the area of rare diseases to be included within the new strategic framework to guide the Commission’s future work in the field of Public Health. This contribution pertains to the Commission’s Discussion Document for a Health Strategy, “Health in Europe: A Strategic Approach”.
Objectives include consolidating the position of rare diseases as a priority in the political agenda of European decision-makers; fighting the impact of rare diseases on the lives of patients by improving access to diagnosis, information, treatment and care, through exchange of good practices and patient support, and via social and educational services; and promoting basic and clinical research to develop medicinal products and therapies. Proposals include a Commission Communication and Council Recommendations on rare diseases, an EU High Level Group on rare diseases, a Community Agency for Rare Diseases and, for a global approach, an International Coordination for Orphan Drugs and Rare Diseases (ICORD).

Eurordis si è concentrato su obiettivi e proposte chiave nell’ambito delle malattie rare da inserire all’interno della nuova struttura del programma, affinché facciano da guida al futuro lavoro della Commissione nel campo della salute pubblica. Questo contributo si riferisce al Documento di discussione della Commissione per un programma concernente la salute dal titolo: “Salute in Europa: un approccio strategico”.
Tra gli obiettivi figurano:
il riconoscimento della posizione delle malattie rare e della loro priorità nell’agenda politica dei responsabili delle decisioni in Europa;
la lotta contro l’impatto delle malattie rare sulle vite dei pazienti, lotta condotta migliorando l’accesso alla diagnosi, al trattamento ed alla cura, per mezzo dello scambio di informazioni riguardo alla condotta professionale e al supporto dei pazienti, e per mezzo dei servizi sociali e di programmi educativi;
la promozione della ricerca di base e della ricerca clinica al fine di creare e sviluppare medicinali e terapie.
Tra le proposte figurano:
una comunicazione della Commissione e raccomandazioni del Consiglio concernenti le malattie rare;
la formazione di un gruppo di alto livello dell’UE che si occupi di malattie rare;
un organismo comunitario per le malattie rare e, per un approccio globale, un Coordinamento internazionale per i farmaci “orfani” e le malattie rare (ICORD).
