Discussion

inferior cut/incision

Can't find any occurrences of this term in the net, but I just suppose that 'etelä' could here refer to 'inferior'.

In this site http://www.maitrise-orthop.com/corpusmaitri/orthopaedic/123_... describing hip surgery, you find even a picture of the inferior cut.

In Finnish 'etelä' (south, southern) often refers to sth located below / at the bottom. 'Eteläviilto' can be some kind of physicians' (semi)jargon, used when more literal expressions (alapuolinen viilto, interiorinen viilto) are felt to be too clumsy.

Probably you are right in accepting that 'etelänviilto' is a misheard 'etuviilto'. On this site http://www.tekonivel.net/luentoturku.htm there are told that to date surgery techniques have been 'etuviilto' and 'takaviilto' (and a new technique is gaining ground).
