Sample preparation
Freshwater samples were pressure filtered (Amicon 8050) through capillary pore (CP) membranes (Nucleopore®) (47 mm diameter, nominal pore size 0-015 µm). Membrane conditioning and ultrafiltration procedures are described elsewhere (Goenaga et al., 1987). Filtrates were stored at 4°C until further use.
Fluoride was preconcentrated using a strongly basic anion exchange resin (Amberlite IRA-400) prior to its colorimetric determination. The resin (Cl- - form) slurry was packed in a 0-5 x 5 cm glass column, then washed with 150 ml of 0-01 M NaOH and rinsed with double distilled water.
