Discussion

Fuad Yahya Feb 23, 2005:
Also remember, you do not have to award any points. The points will go to the answer with the highest rating.
Fuad Yahya Feb 23, 2005:
In that case, you state: Here are the translations I have found on line. I do not like them for the following reasons. Can someone suggest an alternative? Remember that translations of the Bible are not sacrosanct.
Fuad Yahya Feb 23, 2005:
That is one of problem with posting questions that don't belong here. KudoZ is for questions that require suggestions beyond the available sources. Translation of a Biblical text is not one of them, unless you do not like the available translations.
Non-ProZ.com Feb 22, 2005:
Dear Sami, you really made me smile :) I am not talking points here or which answer i prefer, what am looking for is correct translation, especially we are dealing with Bible here, I hope u understand my point now.
Sami Khamou Feb 22, 2005:
Dear Mazyoun,
To help you decide I have a good solution. I hereby relinquish my right to receive the points.
Please go ahead and choose Emane's answer.
Non-ProZ.com Feb 22, 2005:
correction: confused.
Non-ProZ.com Feb 22, 2005:
Thank you Fouad for restoring the question and for the advices. I did search online before posting the question and I found both translations that imane kd and Sami gave,I could not make up my mind because both translations are from good sources,I am still conused.

This is to apologize for squashing this question when the head term was (only) nine words long. I wonder which finger I missed when I counted the words. It must have been my left thumb.

The question is restored with apologies to Mazyoun and Sami, but I would also like to take this opportunity to offer you two points of advice, at the risk of seeming like an overbearing older brother.

First Point: You can help yourself accomplish your work faster and more proficiently, as well as sharpen your translation skills, by exercising greater creativity in finding the answers you need. Posting every difficulty you encounter on ProZ may seem like the easy way out, but it is counterproductive.

This New Testament question in particular is a good case in point. You are likely to find an authoritative answer (and much faster) by a simple online search. At the very least, this will save you precious time. The answer is not harder to reach than this website. If you have access to the Internet, then you can find out Biblical verses in any language you want. The Bible is the most widely published and the most freely available book in the universe . By searching for the Biblical verse on your own, you will not only have the satisfaction of finding the text from an authoritative source by your own effort (and faster), but you will also develop greater skill at finding specific, relevant information online. ProZ is a great place when everything else has failed, but it is critically important that you don't declare failure too soon. If you use ProZ as a crutch, you will never be able to walk on your own.

Second Point: If you accept a translation job, you need to have the tools to do the job and to be willing to apply yourself to learn about the subject matter if it is not a subject you know a great deal about. One of the great joys of translation is that it affords us the opportunity to learn stuff we never thought we would learn otherwise. Through my translation and interpreting work, I have learned so much about medicine, pharmacy, criminal law, corporate law, law enforcement, oil and gas, the military, and many other subjects. These are not subjects I studied in college (my majors were electrical engineering, music, and philosophy). But I learned these additional subjects by digging up the information I needed for each project. I could not have learned anything if I had simply relied on a crutch like ProZ for everything.

For this particular project (and possibly for many others to come), I would suggest you acquire an English Bible and an Arabic Bible. They are both available free of charge from many sources. In fact, you can download the whole Bible in just about any format you desire (Word, PDF, etc.) from the Internet.

So please continue to post your interesting questions, but if you care about developing your professional skills, try doing some of the digging yourself first.
