As the first clause is about the volume (of music, I suppose), I would simply render the phrase as something like "the layer by layer / the gradual buildup of volume".
Example sentence:

For I don't know any better about the situation, I suppose "layers" may also go for "scale", as in "musical scale".
In case the context is meant to emphasize about the layers, I suggest translating the term into "the bedding of background music".
