I would appreciate if someone could clarify whether we should use "I" or "the author/reporter" in journalistic writing. Thanks.

Discussion

Wilman (asker) Nov 15, 2007:
Hi Orientalhorizon, the examples above were two separate ones that appeared in two different pieces. Sorry for the confusion. I agree with frank and am inclined to use 'author/reporter' because of the neutrality issue but would like to 'poll the audience' : ) to confirm. Thank you everyone.
orientalhorizon Nov 15, 2007:
If "笔者"and "记者" refers to the same author, then just "I" or "my" as appropriate.
orientalhorizon Nov 15, 2007:
First I think we should know the context, the "笔者" is definitely the author, but if he/she is citing some information from a reporter, then, "笔者" and "记者" would be two different people, in this case, "笔者" would be "I", and "记者", "the reporter"

reporter

In my humble opinion, one would use "reporter" to help declare that the author was an observer, not a participant.

In a traffic accident, one's passenger is not allowed to be the witness as s/he was the driver's passenger and not likely an objective observer.

The same applies.

agree Malcolm Mayfield : esp. Yongmei's "this reporter" for 笔者, while "在记者与xxx的对话中" could refer to "reporters" or "a reporter"
