Some of the reactions to my choice of 'participant' in the context of the question are a little irritated. As pointed out I usually stick very close indeed to the source text in my translations. However, I would recommend a good dictionary.

The only two possibilities are actors or players. I have the impression that after a period of using "players" there is a move towards "actors".

neutral George Hopkins : I have the impression that it better to call a spade a spade, and not fiddle about with words. Barry; I have no wish to rewrite texts, in fact I usually stick as close as possible to the source text. But playing and acting?

The words actor and player are well-established platitudes. If you want to rewrite the text, that's your privilege.
