Pray and exercise | Jan 4, 2007 |
Congratulations on this poll, Pirily. I replied "other", because the first thing I do in the morning is to pray and read the Holy Writings of the Baha'i Faith, sometimes with family and sometimes alone. Then I usually go out running for a half hour daily exercise before breakfast and a shower. In this way, each day starts with "sharpening the saw", both spiritually and bodily.

I often have to leave home very early for morning teleconference interpretation. I stuff my espresso machine in the evening. The routine goes like this: Still 3/4 asleep and mad at life in general, in the first 5 minutes I feed my cats, hit the button on the coffee machine, turn on the computer and jump in a shower. Out of the shower, coffee is ready, mail is in the box for the first glance only. Then a bit of a makeup and in no more than 30 minutes total off I go, second cup of co... Favorite CD, Texas sunshine and incredibly high and bright blue sky, and life is beautiful all over again. ▲ Collapse

Every morning I literally hate myself for switching the computer on before my eyes are fully open, and checking my email before drinking my coffee. I didn't imagine that the majority of colleagues (46% so far) would reply that they do the same!

These daily activities may seem to be quite routine and may lead to boredom to some people, but I do love and enjoy them. Of course, occasional breaks are necessary to relax my mind and body such as playing classical, reggae, and slow rock music, playing my favourite action and comedy VCDs/DVDs, and going to the bookstore for new specific field dictionaries/encyclopaedias.

Well, I can see now that my routine is not unusual at all! Even though I have promised myself to stop doing this, every morning, with eyes still half-closed, I turn on my computer and go to the kitchen to prepare my breakfast while mail is getting into the box. Then I have breakfast at my desk, reading the mail and the news on the web.

Sometimes I check my e-mail and then rush downstairs to have lunch after having worked late in the night. I guess it's not a routine because my schedule is all messed up!

As for "sharpening the saw bodily" I hope to start practicing the bellydance every morning (kind of a New Year resolution:) (I do it now twice per week in the evening). Best wishes, Galina ▲ Collapse

Just wondering if the people who answered "other" were going to the toilet first thing in the morning, or if, like (I hope) everybody else, including me, neglected to mention it and indicated the thing they were doing second thing in the morning... I know it is not as spiritual as praying or the like of it, but it is life too! Just wondering...
It's quite different for me. "First" thing in the morning I do several things, some of them more or less at the same time like Irene, but not related to work, mail or computers (no time): 1.Try to wake up... Hop in some kind of clothing :l 2.Try to wake up the children (4 of them, all in elementary school)... 3.Help some of them get dressed 4.Prepare breakfast (though they are becoming more and more able to help themselves, yay!) 5.Prepare lunchboxes 6.... Then, at nine AM, my other day can finally begin: I sit down at the computer and don't think about the house anymore. Untill I have to think about what I am going to feed the crowd ▲ Collapse

Virgile wrote: Just wondering if the people who answered "other" were going to the toilet first thing in the morning, or if, like (I hope) everybody else, including me, neglected to mention it and indicated the thing they were doing second thing in the morning... Come to think of it, checking e-mail is the second thing, not the first. The first thing is trying to figure out where my eyeglasses ended up when I went to bed. (Apparently, they enjoy wandering around the apartment, exploring.) If they don't materialize after four or five minutes of hunting, I break out the emergency glasses so I can see well enough to find the first pair. Then put the emergency pair away. Then I check e-mail.

When my better half has left the house I settle down with my Bible in peace. After all these years, I still read it in English. Then it's down to work and anything can happen! I've been through all the phases of rushing out, getting my son off to school, even sleeping off night work occasionally... Now I really enjoy not having to rush out in the mornings, as my perfume intolerance is getting worse - so the last year of sharing a bus to town with other people's after-shave and deodorant sometimes meant I was only working at half speed with a migraine attack on the way... But I know I'm very privileged! Keep up the good work! ▲ Collapse
A shower first... only in school days | Jan 5, 2007 |
I answered "Check email", but this is only really so in non-school days. In school days, I wake up about an hour earlier than the kids, and need to be ready by the time they wake up. I only check my email as soon as everything is set for the battle. In non-school days, and specially if my wife does not have to work and can take care of the kids early in the morning, I must confess that I end up doing actual work in the pre-civilised state for a while!
