Description
Being a good interpreter requires more than just knowing a language. In order to become a professional, one needs to have a set of soft and hard skills, such as strong linguistics skills: an extensive vocabulary and excellent written and verbal communication skills is also a must. Specialization and specialty knowledge will be important as well. Technical skills will be paramount as knowing technological tools will help to provide remote interpreting services.

Among key soft skills, a good interpreter should have cultural competence. This is very important as by knowing local norms and customs, an interpreter will help to convey the message better. An interpreter must be a good listener and have a good memory. An interpreter needs to know what to do in stressful situations, how to work with different people and communicate in teams. As a good actor, an interpreter should learn how to work with emotions: show emotional resilience, understand other people's emotions and act in the appropriate manner.

In this course, you will learn how to develop or improve all the skills mentioned above. You will be practicing “Parroting” and “Paraphrasing” as they help to develop listening skills, note-taking skills, and prepare you for interpretation. Since this course is developed specifically for remote interpreters, you will need to record yourself practicing on video, as today more and more clients require video interpreting services. You will be practicing “Interpreting” by working in teams in Virtual Teams and the Mothership.
