Most trips are professional development related, so I'm not sure if that counts. It counts for me as I believe that you can't perform properly without ongoing training, therefore it is very important to travel to the country of your target/source language.

The only time it happened to me, it did me no good at all.
It must have been about 30 years ago. For several months I had been getting small but regular jobs, two or three a week, from a certain agency. Then I attended a meeting organized by the Translators' Guild (forerunner of the ITI) in London, where one of the speakers was the head of this agency. I said a few words at the meeting in support of the speaker, and had a brief conversation with him afterwards, in the course of which he invited me to visit his agency. I did so, and from that day on, I never had another word from them. There was never any complaint about my work, I suppose he just took a dislike to me personally.
