I just learn as I go along.

The trouble with training courses is that they're never specific to your needs, so you learn a load of stuff you don't need, and don't learn a load of stuff you do.

As a translator I’m always learning new things and most of my CPD is done on a daily basis, however some large translation projects I have been doing for a human rights organization require me to update and refresh my knowledge about specific topics (labor rights, LGBT rights, racism, xenophobia, migration, extradition…) and I have been studying these informally on my own, mainly through books and published documents: agreements, conventions, etc. Besides that I’ve attended some summer cou... I'm 52 y.o., translating since 1986. I really don't think traditional courses would be of any use to me anymore. However, I do a lot of researching and reading to stay up to date with the recent kwnowledge and technology, as every translator should.

Chris, channeling Goethe today?

O glücklich, wer noch hoffen kann,
Aus diesem Meer des Irrtums aufzutauchen!
Was man nicht weiß, das eben brauchte man,
Und was man weiß, kann man nicht brauchen. - Faust I, Vers 1064 ff.

O happy the man who still can hope
Though drowned in a sea of error!

What he knows is useless, forever. - translated by "Poetry in Translation"
