Being HIV+ puts you at higher risk for certain cancers. There are a number of reasons why your risk increases. First, your immune system plays an important role in preventing cancer and so if it becomes weakened, particularly as if HIV moves into more advanced stages, it can increase the chances of developing cancer.
Second, many people with HIV are also more likely to have been exposed to other viruses which are known to cause cancer, including Epstein Barr Virus (EBV), Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), and Hepatitis B (HBV). Don’t panic, however; many people who are HIV+ are not co-infected with these viruses, and just because you’ve come into contact with them it doesn’t mean you’re going to develop cancer. You might not be aware that you had or have these viruses since they often don’t cause any symptoms. For this reason, even though tests are available, they aren’t routinely ordered, and they aren’t typically treated unless symptoms develop.
Finally, we know that HIV+ individuals tend to have a higher rate of certain behavioral risk factors for cancer like smoking. Other modifiable risk factors for cancer (i.e., ones that you can change) include being overweight or obese, having a low fruit and vegetable intake, physical inactivity, and excessive alcohol use. Family history can also play a role (i.e., your genes, or DNA, might make you more at risk for certain cancers) but even genetics can be influenced by outside factors such as diet.
