English to German: An excerpt from “Vietnam: North to South” by Liz Dodd, published in National Geographic Traveler January/February 2020
Source text - English As the sun pokes out from behind one of Ha Long Bay’s limestone outcrops and a pink dawn floods the cove where our boat bobs about, my sister turns to me with a told-you-so expression on her face. I’d been halfway through a long-distance bike ride across Vietnam when she’d decided to visit. After days of silent rice fields and wild camping on secluded beaches, the last thing I wanted was a Ha Long Bay cruise — arguably Vietnam’s most cliched activity. But as daylight reveals the otherworldly mountains and forested islands among which we’d slept — said to be jewels spat out by dragons defending Vietnam from invaders — my cynicism is evaporating as quickly as the nighttime humidity.
Friends who know Vietnam well had advised joining a three-day cruise, which, while more expensive, promised a gentler itinerary and more secluded stops. Shorter cruises all tend to follow the same route, they’d said — leapfrogging one another around the bay. By night, I’d been warned, these boats moor together, and the sound of karaoke floats across the water. So, I’d selected a small company with no karaoke and a convincing itinerary.
Shortly after arriving at Tuan Chau Harbour, our ship, a traditional wooden craft, sails into view, standing out from the boisterous party boats around it. Inside, our cabin is sumptuous but sensible, decorated in the kind of typical Vietnamese art I’d seen while travelling across the country. There’s not much time to settle in before we’re mooring at Van Gia, the largest floating fishing village in Ha Long Bay. I pick my way cautiously across its planks and floorboards, peering into nets suspended just below the water. Upon reaching the far side, I jump into a waiting kayak to explore the rest of the inlet.
The Vietnamese government has recently cracked down on the number of boats allowed to cruise around the bay. Even fewer are allowed to overnight there, but ours is one of the lucky ones. The coast is only 20 minutes away, but as dusk descends and Ha Long Bay’s towering limestone cliffs change colour in the fading light, it feels like another world. “Swim before dinner?” my sister asks. We jump off the back of the boat together, the splash resounding around the watching walls of stone.
The next morning, we sail through the prosaically named Dark Cave and Bright Cave — part of an enclosed group of islands. As we drift through coves in silence in our kayaks, monkeys spring from rock to rock. It’s spectacular but pales in comparison to the caves we row into next: called, appropriately enough, Amazing Cave. Here, vast underground chambers roll on and on, full of stalactites transformed into fantastical characters by up-lighting.

Meine Schwester schaut mich an und ich kann ihre Gedanken lesen: „Gar nicht so schlecht, oder?“ Sie hatte ihren Besuch angekündigt, als ich gerade mit dem Rad quer durch Vietnam unterwegs war. Tagelang hatte ich nichts als menschenleere Reisfelder gesehen und an abgelegenen Stränden gecampt. Eine Bootsfahrt in der Halong-Bucht war so ziemlich das Letzte, auf das ich Lust hatte. Schließlich ist so eine Tour wohl das Touristischste, das man in Vietnam machen kann. Als das Tageslicht nun aber langsam einen traumhaften Blick auf die Berge und bewaldeten Inseln der Bucht enthüllt, verdampft mein Zynismus so schnell wie der Morgentau.
Vietnamversierte Freunde hatten uns eine Bootstour von drei Tagen empfohlen. Die ist zwar teurer, aber auch gemächlicher und besucht verstecktere Ecken. Bei kürzeren Ausflügen fahren alle Boote dieselbe Route ab und überholen sich ständig gegenseitig. Nachts, so hatte man mich gewarnt, ankern alle nebeneinander und Karaokegesang dröhnt übers Wasser. Also entschied ich mich für einen kleinen Anbieter ohne Karaoke und mit einem überzeugenden Streckenplan.
Kurz nach unserer Ankunft im Hafen von Tuan Chau kommt schon unser Boot angesegelt. Das traditionelle Holzschiff sticht aus den grellen Partybooten heraus, die sich hier tummeln. Unsere Kabine ist komfortabel, aber praktisch eingerichtet und mit dieser typisch vietnamesischen Kunst dekoriert, die ich auch schon anderswo auf meiner Reise gesehen habe. Gemütlich machen können wir es uns später, denn schon legen wir in Van Gia an, dem größten schwimmenden Fischerdorf in der Halong-Bucht. Vorsichtig bahne ich mir meinen Weg über Bretter und Bohlen und schaue verstohlen in die Netze knapp unter der Wasseroberfläche. Am anderen Ende hüpfe ich in ein bereitstehendes Kajak und erkunde den Rest des Meeresarms.
Die vietnamesische Regierung hat kürzlich eine Höchstgrenze für die Anzahl der Ausflugsboote in der Bucht festgelegt. Unser Schiff ist eins der wenigen, die nachts auf dem Wasser bleiben dürfen. Obwohl wir nur zwanzig Minuten von der Küste entfernt sind, fühlen wir uns bei Sonnenuntergang wie in einer anderen Welt. Im Dämmerlicht ändern die gewaltigen Kalksteinfelsen der Halong-Bucht ihre Farbe. „Lust auf ein Bad vor dem Essen?“, fragt mich meine Schwester. Zusammen springen wir vom Heck des Boots ins Wasser. Unser Platschen hallt zwischen den riesigen Felswänden wider.
Am nächsten Morgen fahren wir durch zwei Höhlen mit den wenig poetischen Namen Helle Grotte und Dunkle Grotte, die zu einer Inselgruppe gehören. Während wir in aller Stille mit dem Kajak kleine Buchten erkunden, springen Affen von Fels zu Fels. Das ist zwar spektakulär, kann aber nicht mit dem nächsten Highlight mithalten: Die „Grotte der Überraschungen“ macht ihrem Namen alle Ehre. Hier schließt sich eine riesige Felsenkammer an die nächste, und dank Flutleuchten werden aus den unzähligen Stalaktiten fantastische Fabelwesen.
