English to Portuguese: Ipads versus Books General field: Social Sciences Detailed field: Education / Pedagogy
Source text - English During the past few years, technology such as iPads has been a growing trend in classrooms. Students are slowly being drawn away from text books and introduced to digital books on iPads. This study seeks to gain insights into the effectiveness of the implementation of technology in early childhood classrooms. To examine the effectiveness of using iPads for reading, this study addresses the following question: Do children comprehend more when reading from iPads? Ten kindergarten students participated in this study. Their reading comprehension scores when reading from iPads and books were collected within a two-week interval and then compared. After reading stories from iPads and books, students were asked comprehension questions from the DRA and their scores were recorded for each section of comprehension skills which included: previewing, retelling of events, character details, retelling using vocabulary, retelling with teacher’s support, reflections, and making connections. The data showed that nine out of ten students scored higher in reading comprehension when reading from iPads, and one student scored the same on both. This study suggests that more research on effective, appropriate, and intentional teaching with iPads and other technology in classrooms is needed to further examine the benefits and downfalls of using such devices in the field of education.
English to Portuguese: Bovine Bone Charcoal as Support Material for Immobilization of Bacillus firmus Strain 37 and Production of Cyclomaltodextrin Glucanotransferase by Batch Fermentation in a Fluidized Bed General field: Science Detailed field: Biology (-tech,-chem,micro-)
Source text - English The process described in the present work uses air supplementation in a fluidized bed reactor containing Bacillus firmus strain 37 immobilized on active bovine bone charcoal, to produce by batch fermentation the enzyme CGTase (cyclomaltodextrin-glucanotransferase). Three different aeration rates were evaluated. The maximum CGTase activity was achieved after 120 hours of fermentation with aeration rate of 2 vvm and was equal to 2.48 U/mL. When 0.5 and 1 vvm were used the enzymatic activities achieved 1.1 and 0.57 U/mL, respectively. Bovine bone charcoal was characterized in terms of surface area, pore size and volume. To the best of our knowledge, the immobilization of microorganism cells in bovine bone charcoal for CGTase production has not been reported in the literature. Our results showed that fluidized bed reactor allows retaining high concentration of biomass, improving biomass-substrate contact and operation at low residence times, which resulted in improved enzyme production. Therefore, the process as proposed has great potential for industrial development.

Portuguese to English: Is the Treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder a New Cause of Cataract? General field: Medical Detailed field: Medical: Pharmaceuticals
Source text - Portuguese Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most common behavioral disorder of childhood and it has 5% prevalence among children worldwide. In the treatment of ADHD stimulant medications are recommended as the first choice of pharmacotherapy. Methylphenidate-HCl is a sympathomimetic amine derivative pharmacological agent; and it is widely used in the treatment of ADHD. Although there are some articles showing that oral methylphenidate increases the risk of glaucoma, to the best of our knowledge, there is only one case report that indicates a possible relation of methylphenidate treatment and cataract formation.
