I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask, but here goes. I am translating a passport that has the number punched into the paper in little pin pricks. Is there a word for this? I use other descriptive terms like [Paper stamp: 12345] or [Round seal: City clerk] or [Handwritten: 12345]. I would like to accurately describe these numbers.

This is, of course, a wild guess.

(laser) perforated number is indeed what HMG calls it. E.g. https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/118771/basic-passport-checks.pdf "The holes of the laser perforated number are larger at the front of the book and reduce in size to the back. ", "A check symbol is included within the laser perforated pass
port number.", etc.

EDIT: Sorry Kevin. By the time I got back, your post had been added.

Thank you May 9, 2019

Thank you for your help with this; "laser-perforated" looks great to me. I just couldn't figure out how to post it as a Kudoz question. In a way, these descriptions are part of the conventions of our craft, which is why it ended up in this forum.

This would be a question for the English monolingual "pair" and the term asked would be fine as "pin prick number" with the context you gave in your first post.

Even if this regulation regards exclusively EU passports, it might be useful: https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/?uri=celex:32004R2252
