Hi, I used Acrobat Reader during years in order to read / write PDF files... Unfortunately ADOBE plans to stop supporting the product very soon. I know that registering to ADOBE Pro would be a solution, but I can't afford it (mensual fee!) What cheap but robust replacement solution do you suggest? May be the new Winzip would be a convenient solution (about 100€ / year), did somebody test it? Thanks a lot and have a good day ... First of all, I'm pretty sure that Acrobat Reader is not being discontinued anytime soon. Where did you hear that? Second of all, WinZip is a completely different type of program. It's a compression utility (for zipping and unzipping folders and files). It's not a PDF reader. See: https://get.adobe.com/uk/reader/ ... Adobe stopped supporting Flash Player, not Acrobat Reader. But you could receive notifications when working with other Adobe products (including Acrobat Reader). Keep using it

See more 1) A simple check on the Adobe web site shows that Acrobat is alive and well (https://acrobat.adobe.com/us/en/acrobat.html). The FREE Acrobat reader version can still be downloaded here : https://get.adobe.com/reader/. (I did download it last month. I still don't like it.) 2) Adobe products which have been discontinued or are no longer supported are listed on the page below. In summary, WRT Acrobat, I think they are the old, non-cloud, versions of full Acrobat (as opposed of the mere Reader, which was always and remains free). https://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/policy-pricing/discontinued-products.html 3) At any rate, the current full version costs $144/year, but it exists only in the cloud (IOW, it can't be installed on a local drive). It all depends if you merely want to READ PDF files, or if you want to create them (MS Office products can save in PDF format), such as assembling pages from different sources, or add security features. 4) There are quite a few free Acrobat clones, which can be found through an Internet search. WinZip Ultimate Collection includes "Corel PDF Fusion". You can download a 30-day trial of Corel PDF Fusion separately to test it, and you can buy it separately for about €45.00. It seems to have quite a few nice features, including "Edit and rearrange content (just select a line of text and start typing to make changes)" and "Edit or add text anywhere in a document".

Madeleine Chevassus wrote: I used Acrobat Reader during years in order to read / write PDF files... What exactly do you mean by "Acrobat Reader" in connection with "write"? Editing? Creating? Converting? The reader can't do anything of this. FWIW, for years MS Word and most other word processors are able to read & write .pdf. Today's browsers can read .pdf as well.

Foxit Reader replaces it perfectly free of charge: https://www.foxitsoftware.com/fr/pdf-reader/ The Phantom version is not free, but very impressive... As far as compression issues are concerned, I also opted a long time ago for 7-Zip: https://www.7-zip.fr/ As OCR is often talked about for PDFs, I add a little marvel also free, FreeOCR: http://www.paperfile.net/ All this is really free and works very well with Windows 10. Madeleine Chevassus wrote: What cheap but robust replacement solution do you suggest? If you only want a PDF reader, then SumatraPDF is free and probably the quickest Windows software out there. Applications to create PDF files usually need to be paid for. I use NitroPro, which requires a one-off payment rather than a monthly charge. Free compression software? 7-Zip. It seems to have quite a few nice features, including "Edit and rearrange content (just select a line of text and start typing to make changes)" and "Edit or add text anywhere in a document". I installed it and gave it a spin. The claim to "just select a line of text and start typing to make changes" is a lie. If you want to edit text, you have to highlight text, and then right-click and select the option to "replace" the text. Then you can type replacement text, but the program does not move text up for you or rewrap text in any way. So if the word you're trying to replace is shorter than the new word, you'll get large empty spaces, and if it is longer, then you get overlapping text. It gets the font right, though. The claim to be able to "rearrange content" is also a lie. You can rearrange pages within a PDF file (or add pages from other PDF files) but you can't rearrange any of the content. You can't move images around and you can't move paragraphs around. This is not worth €45.00.

Madeleine Chevassus wrote: I used Acrobat Reader during years in order to read / write PDF files. Wait, by "write" do you mean that you can create PDFs with it? If so, then any PDF printer will do. I personally use doPDF. It adds a "printer" that prints to PDF from within any program. And as you have seen, there are many programs that can read PDF files. The latest version from Adobe is called Acrobat Reader DC, and it is free. It's not the most user-friendly tool out there, but it does all of the basic stuff.

You can actually open and edit PDF files using Microsoft Word as long as your Microsoft Office is 2013 or above. Use the Open command to open your PDF file. | | | Foxit Reader, Microsoft Office | Mar 14, 2021 |

Thanks a lot and have a good day Madeleine I use Foxit Reader, which does a great job for reading, but you can also open PDF documents in Office. Now, you say "write" PDF files. When you have Foxit Reader or Office 365/2016, a PDF printer is installed that converts your documents to a PDF file. But if you want to "edit" PDF files, there are a lot of online tools and standalone applications that are way cheaper than Adobe Acrobat, and just as effective. | | | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Hi, I used Acrobat Reader in order to read / write PDF files...
