EDUCATION

I studied Russian and German at Cambridge University. My degree course subjects covered: Russian-English and English-Russian translation, Church Slavonic, history papers in Kievan Rus’ 800-1300 and medieval history 1300-1600, Russian nineteenth and twentieth century literature, German literature and language.

TEN YEARS IN RUSSIA

I lived in Russia for over 10 years, first in Akademgorodok, Novosibirsk and later in the Altai Republic. In Altai I was interpreting in conference rooms and offices but also in remote landscapes, sometimes on foot, sometimes on horseback, in the mountains, in hospitals, in yurts, around campfires, at sacred sites. Here I learned the three skill components essential to effective cross-cultural communication: relationship-building, cultural immersion and research.
