Catalán/Català Jul 18

For sure!!.

He sings in Catalan but, by his accent, I can tell he is not a Catalonian native.

Nice weekend!!

Beautiful Jul 18

Thanks! Also for the link, Russell. It makes sense, I was thinking it was either Catalan or Italian. And yes, the song is beautiful, it's also on the Putumayo compilation: Mediterranean Odyssey.

Happy weekend!

A Sardinian discovering Sardinian music... Jul 19

Ciao Claudia,

thanks for the link. I'm listening to the beautiful song, which I had never heard before, even though I am Sardinian

I just wanted to add that Alghero is a city on the west coast, not a province
They speak Italian and Catalan there while in the rest of Sardinia we speak Italian and different varieties of the Sardinian language, depending on the area/region.

Have a great day everybody!

Carla

City not Province Jul 19

Carla is quite right to correct me. Alghero used to be a province but the city is now in the Province of Sassari.

I've never heard that song, but having been raised in Sardinia, an island rich in art, history, and breathtaking sceneries, I know that Sardinian people are capable of amazing things!

Thanks for sharing this song, Claudia, I loved it.

Below, the picture of one of the beaches of Alghero. Enjoy

PS. Ciao Carla, speriamo di vederci presto. Un forte abbraccio!
PS 2. Ciao Russell!

Putumayo Jul 19

I'm glad you all liked the song. I'm a sucker for Putumayo albums and a friend made me a mix CD with some songs I didn't have. That particular song is in a compilation called 'A Mediterranean Odyssey: Athens to Andalucia'.

Putumayo is a record label that promotes great music from around the world and supports good causes. I still haven't found a not-so-good 'Putumayo' song. So if you want to discover great world music, you should buy these albums. They're actually really easy to find since they have distributors around the world; they also produce a syndicated radio show, the Putumayo Hour, that is broadcast in many countries.

Anyway, since you liked this song, I uploaded some of the songs in the mix CD and some others I had; and where they can be found. I know, I know ... but I really love the music and hopefully somebody else will too.

Mix CD (the songs can be listened online): http://www.4shared.com/dir/8329659/ae883af3/Putumayo_mixtape.html

Edit: texjax DDS PhD, that is absolutely stunning!

This song is in Alguerès Jul 23

...which is the Alghero variant of Catalan.

Here is some kind of explanation (in Catalan) for Càlic:
http://ca.wikipedia.org/wiki/C%C3%A0lic

Alguerès is a variant that is quite old and stems from times when Aragon-Catalonia extended to Sardinia (around 1323). It is now predominantly spoken by old people and has been mixed with Italian. Some of its peculiarities are the fact that consonants are replaced: barca becomes balca, aigua becomes algua, clau becomes crau.
People speaking Catalan do not have great difficulty communicating in this older version - I was in Alghero at the end of June and had fun speaking Catalan even though I do not speak Italian.

Younger people tend to discard Alguerès as unnecessary and outdated. However, one of the local TV stations is now broadcasting news in Alguerès which is quite fascinating as this is hands-on linguistic work at its best.
You can have a glimpse here:
http://www.algheronotizie.it/catalantv.php?video=Tg%20Al_2008_07_22%20Martedi%20.flv

For the rest of the list, news files in Alguerès start with Tg Al_DATE Day

Have fun!

Alguerès Jul 23

Thank you so much Irene for the information and links, it's all so fascinating and beautiful. It makes me want to learn the Catalan and then learn this variant. Anyway, I can't get tired of listening to it.

Happy week,

Claudia

Claudio Sanna Jul 23

I found an interview in Alguerès with a member of the band Càlic, Claudia Sanna. It's actually not that hard to understand for people that already speak a romance language.
