Translation - Italian In Egitto torna in auge il dibattito sulla sua identità: sarà araba o egiziana? Ma se talvolta la disquisizione tocca livelli intellettuali abbastanza alti, in altre occasioni risulta priva di fondamento.
A mio avviso, questa questione continua a tornare all’ordine del giorno perché non si è mai raggiunta una vera conclusione.
Volendo fare un breve excursus storico, tale problematica si è affacciata alla coscienza moderna negli anni Trenta, per poi riapparire in fasi cruciali della cultura araba, vale a dire negli anni ’50 e ’60, il periodo dopo la Naksa, o dopo Camp David. Dunque, ogni qual volta l’Egitto affronta un periodo di forte crisi identitaria, il dibattito riprende vigore, poiché nel Paese vige un senso di forte autocritica che porta gli autoctoni ad analizzare tutti gli aspetti di quanto accade.
Il momento attuale è proprio uno di quei momenti, poiché si è creata una spaccatura nell’opinione pubblica sulla questione del blitz al sindacato dei giornalisti. Se da una parte troviamo coloro che chiedono a gran voce le dimissioni del ministro degli Interni, dall’altra parte la giornalista Safiyah Mustafa Amin dichiara che la libertà deve essere innanzitutto del popolo prima che della stampa, poiché oggi l’Egitto sta pagando a caro prezzo il suo passato.
Infatti, mentre il Paese appare dilaniato da diverse battaglie, come quelle del Sinai, dei tunnel, dei sindacati ecc., per la prima volta Daesh è uscito allo scoperto con i suoi soliti metodi, facendo apparire quasi frivole le altre preoccupazioni che affliggono l’Egitto. In questo contesto, Mustafa Amin fa notare proprio che, mentre il Paese si trova costretto a dover chiedere aiuti finanziari (nonostante in passato fosse tra i Paesi più ricchi), la stampa non fa altro che occuparsi di questioni secondarie, come gli stipendi della polizia e complotti vari.
Insomma, sia che la sua identità venga definita araba o egiziana, l’Egitto è un grande Paese in crisi. Per quanto ci riguarda, noi vogliamo che sia arabo e che mostri l’orgoglio arabo, poiché farne a meno significherebbe reggersi su un castello di carta. Ma se al contrario gli egiziani volessero distaccarsi da noi, dove si andrebbe a finire? I nostri destini sono legati. Tuttavia il fine ultimo non deve essere né egiziano, né arabo, ma connesso all’intera umanità.
Dunque è a questo che deve servire la grande potenzialità dello Stato egiziano, che non deve farsi ammaliare da inutili superstizioni e istinti tribali che lo porterebbero solo a una totale disgregazione. Il dibattito tra nazioni è la fonte viva della civiltà, ma se si trasforma in mera polemica rappresenta uno spreco di tempo ed energie.
Al contrario, nel mezzo di tutti questi inutili sprechi, dobbiamo riuscire a intravedere il vero volto dell’Egitto, ben raffigurato dell’artista Mohammed Sobhi che dedica la maggior parte del suo tempo e del suo denaro all’assistenza dei poveri e dei bisognosi. E non si ferma neanche una volta a chiedere la città, la tribù o il quartiere di provenienza, ma offre semplicemente il suo aiuto incondizionato, onorando la grandezza del popolo egiziano.

Complessivamente il fondo ha la superficie lorda totale di Ha 57.13.63 per un Reddito Dominicale complessivo pari a 19.119,33 € ed un Reddito Agrario complesivo pari a 7.531,62 €.
Il terreno è costituito da un unico corpo pianeggiante, suddiviso in 25 lotti con leggero dislivello, separati da strade poderali interne. Il fondo confina a Sud con Strada interpoderale, a Nord con altre proprietà e con il Canale di Bonifica Lignara e Est con S.S. 18 e ad Ovest con altre proprietà.
La zona in cui il fondo è ubicato è inserita nella parte più importante del tessuto produttivo agricolo della Piana del Sele. Al fondo si accede dalla strada statale 18 attraverso una strada interpoderale e dal punto di vista urbanistico è compreso in zona “E sottozona Ed di pianura. Il fondo rientra nel comprensorio del Consorzio di Bonifica Destra Sele e risulta totalmente irriguo potendo utilizzare sia l’acqua in pressione del Consorzio sia emungere l’acqua da due pozzi privati.
Dal punto di vista fisico il terreno è tendenzialmente franco con buona percentuale di argilla e limo, di elevatissime potenzialità produttive. Il clima è particolarmente favorevole per le coltivazioni di ortive in serra e per le colture frutticole semiforzate. Il fondo non è a rischio idraulico, non ci sono stati mai esondazioni o allagamenti poiché il terreno presenta quote di elevazioni superiori ai canali consortili. Il fondo è dotato di energia elettrica, acqua potabile ed una serie di servizi igienici disposti lungo tutto l’appezzamento.
I 57 ettari sono così coltivati.

Il fondo così costituito è ottimamente sistemato per lo sgrondo delle acque meteroriche, infatti la regimazione delle acque avviene attraverso un impianto di smaltimento per alcuni tratti intubato e per altri a cielo aperto.
Gli investimenti per la trasformazione fondiaria sono iniziati nel 2010 e sono continuati fino al 2016. Le opere realizzate in questi 6 anni sono così riassumibili:

Messa a dimora di vigneto per uva da tavola
Realizzazione di strade poderale ed opere connesse

Impianto fotovoltaico per la produzione di energia elettrica
La Piana del Sele per concentrazione produttiva è diventata un grande indotto agro-industriale, i risultati in termini di fatturato e la fitta rete di relazioni tra imprese e territorio fanno affermare con sicurezza che tutto il contesto si presti a una definizione di distretto. Nella Piana del Sele, infatti, il collegamento tra aziende produttrici, la concentrazione territoriale, la discreta rappresentatività della filiera e la presenza di una domanda crescente di prodotti "pronti al consumo" anche in canali diversi dalla Grande Distribuzione Organizzata rendono una fotografia del contesto della produzione agricola sia frutticola che per la quarta gamma in evoluzione e competitivo.
Molto interessante appare l'evoluzione aziendale che nel giro di un ventennio si è registrata sul territorio, partita da una rotazione colturale significativa che ha visto alternarsi fragole, pomodori, pesche per poi finire alle insalate con imprenditori che, prima individualmente e, poi, associati in OP hanno affrontato le diverse crisi e fronteggiato al meglio le richieste di mercato. Gli attori della frutticultura e della quarta gamma della Piana del Sele presentano, dunque, realtà imprenditoriali giovani, con una buona propensione all'innovazione, con un buon appeal sui mercati europei.
Gli stessi si ritrovano in un contesto imprenditoriale fortemente concorrenziale, con poche barriere all'entrata e prezzi quasi imposti dalla grande distribuzione e ciò nonostante con ottimi ritorni in termini di fatturato considerato la modifica degli stili di vita e la crescente richiesta di questi prodotti da parte dei consumatori.

Overall, the land has a total gross area of Ha 57.13.63 with a total Estimated Rental Value amounting to 19.119,33 €, and an Agricultural Income amounting to 7.531,62 €.
The land consists of a single flat area, divided into 25 lots with slight difference in height, and separated by internal farm roads. It is bordered to the South by a farm track, to the North by Canale di Bonifica Lignara and other properties, to the East by S.S. 18, and to the West by other properties.
The area where the land is located is included in the most important part of the agricultural production system of Piana del Sele. You can access to the estate going down the trunk road SS 18, and then passing thorugh one of the farm roads; from an urban point of view, the land is based in the zone named “E subarea Ed of the plain”. The area is part of the district of the Consortium “Bonifica Destra Sele”, and it is totally irrigable, presenting the possibility to use the Consortium’s pressure water and also to draw it from two private wells.
From a physical standpoint, the land is basically loose-textured, presenting a good percentage of clay and silt which give it a high productive potential. The climate is particularly favourable for the greenhouse cultivation of vegetable crops, and for semi-forced fruit crops. The land is not at water risk; indeed, there have never been floodings, because its terrain presents an elevation which is superior to that of Consortium’s channels. The estate is equipped with electricity, drinking water and a series of toilet facilities arranged along the entire plot of land.
The 57 hectares of the property are cultivated in the following way:
• Under glass grapes
• Under glass peaches
• Open-grown fennels
The estate thus constituted is settled very well for the draining of rainwater, because the regulation of the water takes place through a disposal plant, which is partially in tubes and partially open-cast.
Investments in land transformation began in 2010 and continued until 2016. The works carried out during these six years are summarized below:

Today the Piana del Sele territory presents a wide range of associated agricultural businesses with a related high concentration of production; the results in terms of turnover and the dense network of relationships between the companies and this territory lead to the conclusion that the said context can be properly defined a district. The plain represents a detailed picture of today’s agricultural and fruit industry, which is evolving very fast and becoming more and more competitive; some examples of this are: the connection between manufacturers, the territorial concentration, the good representativity of the supply chain and the growing demand for "ready to eat” products even in channels which are different from the large-scale distribution.
The business evolution which has occurred in this area during the last twenty years appears very interesting; starting from a substantial crop rotation in which it has been cultivated strawberries, tomatoes, peaches and finally salads, the entrepreneurs, at first individually, and then as members of producer organisations, have managed to face several crises, trying to meet the market demands at best. Therefore, in Piana del Sele the stakeholders in fruit cultivation and in the production of ready-to-use goods represent a young business world, with a positive attitude towards innovation and an appeal on European markets.
As a result, these entrepreneurs are finding themselves in a highly competitive business environment, which present few barriers to entry it and prices almost imposed by large retailers; nevertheless, they are witnessing excellent results in terms of turnover, thanks to the changes in people’s lifestyle and the growing demand for their products by consumers.

The 9th of October 1958, Pius XII, the most talked about pope in world history, died. The Catholic Church, and fore mostly the Romans, mourned the loss of the man who seemingly had led the Holy City undamaged through the war. Still until Rolf Hochhuth published his controversial play Der Stellvertreter (‘The Surrogate’) in 1963, many people considered Pius XII the greatest of all popes. Hochhuth accused his inaction to condemn the extermination of the Jews, let alone to stop it. Ever since historians debate the role of the pope concerning the fate of the Jews before, during and after World War II.
To what extend did Pius XII knew about the extermination of the Jews? And what was the reaction of the world’s highest moral leader to it? These questions have become relevant again. Firstly, the Vatican wants to canonize Pius XII. Secondly, because the Catholic Church still has not taken co-responsibility. And last but not least, because the last of the direct witnesses of this dramatic event are vanishing, while there is an answerability to them. It is still a necessity to uncover the mechanisms which have lead to the Holocaust and to draw lessons from them.
In my book, Pius XII en de vernietiging van de Joden (‘Pius XII and the extermination of the Jews’) I examined the position of Pacelli, the later Pius XII, towards Hitler’s seizure of power, the downfall of the catholic Centrum Party, the Concordat between Nazi-Germany and the Vatican, the encyclical letter Mit Brennender Sorge (‘Con viva preoccupazione’), paganism, the national-socialistic education programs, the ‘T4-program’ (the murder of physically and mentally handicapped persons), the invasion of Poland, Operation Barbarossa, the Jews in the Netherlands Belgium and France, the attitude of priest-president Tiso of Slovakia, the Ustasa in Croatia, the deportation of Jews from Rome, the help offered by the Vatican to war criminals, the resistance against Nazism, the refusal of the Church to give back Jewish children who had been in hiding, the failure of the Allies, anti-Semitism after the Holocaust, and the moral question of guilt of the Church and the pope.
One of the chapters in my book examines the Holocaust in Hungary. There, too, the Pope and the Catholic Church played an ambiguous role. This small booklet deals with the Hungarian Holocaust and the attitude of the Catholic Church and the Pope in the face of this dramatic event. The history of the Hungarian Holocaust is especially relevant because it gives a good illustration of the lack of the deafening silence of Pius XII to the deportations and the mass murders that were generally known in that stage of the war. I want to place three timelines next to each other: (1) the deportations and the extermination of the Jews in Auschwitz-Birkenau, (2) the informing of the Vatican about this, (3) and the progress made by the Allies in Italy in 1944.
Anti-Semitism in Hungary
The Jews of Hungary were fairly well integrated into Hungarian society. During the 1920s and 1930s, and even during the war until 1944, they lived in relative safety. That doesn’t mean that the Hungarians were positive about the Jews. Just as in other European countries, intense anti-Semitism existed in Hungary. The great majority of the population was Catholic and had developed a strong disgust for the Jews through the Church.
The first anti-Semitic regulations date back to 1920. Starting in 1938, Hungary under Miklós Horthy passed a series of anti-Jewish measures in emulation of Germany's Nuremberg Laws. Cardinal Pacelli, the later pope Pius XII, knew about this, but tolerated this anti-Semitism. He maintained good relations with Miklós Horthy and met him the 1th of May, 1938, during his visit as papal legate to the World Eucharistic Congress, held in the capital Budapest. On that Congress, Pius XII made an unambiguous antisemitic speech in which he presented the Jews as the enemies of Jesus calling for his crucifixion. One year later, in May 1939, Hungary approved harsh anti-Semitic laws. An anti-Jewish Law from the 5th of May, 1939 defined Jews racially. They could no longer work for the government and they lost their right to vote. Another Jewish Law from the 8th of August, 1941, prohibited intermarriage and penalized sexual intercourse between Jews and non-Jews
In the beginning of the war the Hungarian government deported tens of thousands of Jews from the Carpathian Mountains and Ukraine to the German zone – the 14th March 1939 Hungary occupied the Carpathians-Ukraine. In the annexed part of Yugoslavia by Hungary, the area around Vojvodina, the Jews were massacred, as together with the Serbs in Novi Sad the 20th of January, 1942. The Novi Sad massacre led to protest in the Hungarian parliament and Admiral Horthy ordered in 1943 an investigation. A number of Hungarian military officers were later brought to trial and sentenced.
But the vast majority of the Hungarian Jews, approximately 750,000 remained sheltered from the Nazis for the time being. The general situation of the Hungarian Jews was more positive than in those parts of Europe under German control where the creation of ghettos and deportation were the order of the day. Nevertheless, Hungary was a reliable ally of Germany at the beginning of the war. Many Hungarian soldiers fought with the German Army on the Eastern Front against the Russians. During the Battle of Stalingrad, the Hungarian Second Army suffered terrible losses. After the defeat of the Nazis in Stalingrad, the tide turned, and the opportunistic leader of the Hungarian state, Miklós Horthy, sought to engage with the Allies. He faced a difficult choice: either to fight on with the Nazis to the end, or to run the risk that his country would be occupied by German troops. Horthy started secret negotiations with the Americans.
Up until the Spring of 1944, Horthy resisted German pressure and refused to allow the deportation of Hungarian Jews to the German extermination camps in occupied Poland. The 18th of March, 1944, Adolf Hitler summoned Horthy to a conference in Schloss Klessheim, a castle near Salzburg in Austria, where he demanded greater cooperation from the Hungarian state. At the same time Hitler launched Operation Margarethe. German troops occupied Hungary the 19th of March 1944 to guarantee Horthy's compliance. In effect Hungary was reduced to a German protectorate. SS-Brigadeführer Edmund Veesenmayer became Reich plenipotentiary and immediately began preparing the Hungarian Holocaust.
The Hungarian Holocaust
While waging war against the Soviet Union, Hungary engaged in armistice negotiations with the United States and the United Kingdom. Adolf Hitler discovered this betrayal. As described, the 19th of March 1944, the German Army invaded Hungary. Horthy was forced to discharge Prime Minister Miklós Kállay from office and to form a new government under the leadership of Döme Sztójay. The cabinet also included the extreme anti-Semites László Endre and László Baky. They would handle the ‘Jewish problem’. SS-Obersturmbannführer Adolf Eichmann came with his Einsatzkommando from Mauthausen to Budapest. He settled in hotel Majestic, next to the headquarters of the police. He would take the lead in what he later described as ‘the best-handled deportation of Jews in his whole career’.
The 20th of March 1944, Adolf Eichmann held a meeting with representatives of the Jewish community to establish a Jewish Council that was to make up a list of all Jewish possessions. Nine days later, all Jews were required to wear a yellow arm band with a Star of David. Jews had to move into ghettos, to be deported afterwards. From the 15th of May until the 6th of July 1944, over a period of less than eight weeks, 437,402 Hungarian Jews were taken away by 147 trains and the major part of these were gassed in Auschwitz-Birkenau. The Germans had laid the rail lines into the camp several days prior to this so that the extermination work would go more efficiently. The trains stopped in the death camp of Birkenau along a huge platform so that the Hungarian Jews could be brought as close as possible to the gas chambers. The first transport with 4,000 Jews arrived in Auschwitz-Birkenau the 17th of May 1944, of which just 17 people survived. The 18th, 19th and 20th of May, new transports followed. During those four days, more than 16,000 Hungarian Jews arrived. Then the daily average of Hungarian Jews arriving was about 8,500.
The Italian Jewish Holocaust survivor Primo Levi has been deported to Auschwitz in February 1944. In his book Se questo e un uomo he writes about this influx of Hungarian Jews in the camp: “the whole summer there were transports arrived from Hungary; one in two prisoners was now Hungarian and Hungarian became the second language after Yiddish in the camp”. With each arriving train, selections were made by SS-officers, and some men and women, who could work, were admitted into the camp. But within a few weeks, most of the Jews were being gassed and cremated.
The death camp could not follow the huge influx of Hungarian Jews. The crematoria could hardly handle the number of dead bodies. But Eichmann wanted to destroy all Hungarian Jews. In his autobiography, Rudolf Höss, the Commander of the SS at Auschwitz, wrote the following with regard to the deportation of the Hungarian Jews: “On Pohl's orders I made three visits to Budapest in order to obtain an estimate of the number of able-bodied Jews that might be expected. [...] Eichmann was completely obsessed with his mission and also convinced that this extermination action was necessary in order to preserve the German people in the future from the destructive intentions of the Jews. Eichmann was also a determined opponent of the idea of selecting from the transports Jews who were fit for work. He regarded it as a constant danger to his scheme for a ‘final solution’ because of the possibility of mass escapes or some other event occurring which would enable the Jews to survive. (…) We executed about 400,000 Hungarian Jews alone at Auschwitz in the summer of 1944.”
In that period, the Allied press knew quite well what happened to those deported Jews. The New York Times published detailed reports the 4th, 10th and 18th of May about the extermination of Hungarian and other Jews (at the same time, transports also arrived from Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Italy and Greece). The 18th of May The New York Times published ‘Savage blows hit Jews in Hungary’: “The first act in a program of mass extermination of Jews in Hungary is over, and 80,000 Jews of the Carpathian provinces have already disappeared. They have been sent to murder camps in Poland.” The article ends with the following words: “Official reports from neutral diplomatic sources in Budapest emphasize that unless drastic measures are taken immediately to put an end to the Hungarian Government’s brutality 1,000,000 Hungarian Jews are doomed.”

Il 9 Ottobre 1958 moriva Pio XII, il Papa più chiacchierato della
storia. La Chiesa Cattolica, e in generale tutti i romani piansero
la perdita di un uomo che apparentemente era riuscito a
preservare la Città Santa durante la guerra. Addirittura, Pio XII
viene considerato da molti fedeli il più grande di tutti i Papi, o
quantomeno è stato così fino al 1963, anno di pubblicazione
della controversa opera teatrale di Rolf Hochhuth, dal titolo Der
Stellvertreter (Il Vicario). La pièce accusa la mancata condanna
da parte del Santo Padre verso lo sterminio degli ebrei, per non
parlare della totale assenza di atti concreti volti a fermare tali
atrocità. Grazie alla pubblicazione di questo testo, gli storici
hanno aperto un dibattito sul ruolo del suddetto Papa nel destino
toccato agli ebrei prima, durante e a seguito della Seconda
Guerra Mondiale.
Fino a che punto si estendeva la conoscenza di Pio XII sui fatti
riguardanti lo sterminio degli ebrei? E qual era stata la reazione
del più importante leader dell’etica mondiale dinanzi a tali
eventi? Oggi queste domande sono tornate all’ordine del giorno
per diversi motivi. Innanzitutto, è emersa l’intenzione del
Vaticano di canonizzare Pio XII; in secondo luogo, la Chiesa
Cattolica non ha ancora ammesso nessuna responsabilità nella
faccenda. In ultimo, ma non per importanza, la progressiva
scomparsa dei testimoni diretti di questi avvenimenti rende

ancor più pressante la necessità di dover fornire una spiegazione
ai loro quesiti. Per tutti questi motivi sussiste il dovere morale di
svelare i meccanismi che hanno portato all’Olocausto, e trarne le
necessarie lezioni di vita.
Nel mio libro Pius XII en de vernietiging van de Joden (Pio XII
e lo sterminio degli ebrei) ho esaminato la posizione di Pacelli,
più tardi Pio XII, riguardo diverse questioni: la presa del potere
di Hitler, la caduta del cattolico Partito Centrista, l’accordo tra la
Germania Nazista e il Vaticano, l’enciclica Mit Brennender
Sorge (‘Con viva preoccupazione’), il paganesimo, i programmi
scolastici nazional-socialisti, il ‘Programma T4’ (l’assassinio di
persone con disabilità fisiche o mentali), l’invasione della
Polonia, l’Operazione Barbarossa, la presenza degli ebrei in
Olanda, Belgio e Francia, la condotta del Presidente (nonché
sacerdote) Tiso della Slovacchia, la Ustascia in Croazia, la
deportazione degli ebrei da Roma, l'aiuto offerto dal Vaticano ai
criminali di guerra, la resistenza contro il nazismo, il rifiuto
della Chiesa di restituire i bambini ebrei che avevano richiesto
asilo, il fallimento degli Alleati, l'antisemitismo dopo
l'Olocausto, e, infine, la questione morale delle colpe da
attribuire alla Chiesa e al Papa in tutta questa situazione.
Uno dei capitoli del mio libro prende in esame l'Olocausto in
Ungheria. Anche qui, infatti, il Papa e la Chiesa cattolica
giocarono un ruolo decisamente ambiguo. Questo breve
opuscolo vuole occuparsi del comportamento tenuto dalla

Chiesa e dal Papa a fronte di questi drammatici eventi. La storia
dell’Olocausto Ungherese risulta particolarmente rilevante, in
quanto fornisce un buon esempio dell’assordante silenzio di Pio
XII in tema di deportazioni e omicidi di massa, fatti di cui quasi
tutti erano a conoscenza durante il periodo della guerra.
Traccerò dunque tre linee temporali molto vicine l’una all’altra:
(1) le deportazioni e lo sterminio degli ebrei nel campo di
Auschwitz-Birkenau, (2) l’avvenuta informazione del Vaticano
riguardo tali avvenimenti, (3) i progressi compiuti dagli Alleati
in Italia nel 1944.
L’antisemitismo in Ungheria
In Ungheria gli ebrei erano abbastanza ben integrati nella società
del luogo. Durante gli anni ’20 e ’30 del XX secolo, e persino
durante la guerra fino al 1944, essi avevano potuto vivere
relativamente in sicurezza. Ciò non significa che gli ungheresi
vedessero gli ebrei di buon occhio; tutt’altro, così come in molti
altri Paesi europei, ivi vigeva un forte antisemitismo. Difatti, la
grande maggioranza della popolazione era cattolica, e aveva
sviluppato un forte senso di disgusto nei confronti degli ebrei
attraverso la Chiesa.
Le prime regolamentazioni a carattere antisemita risalgono al
1920. A partire dal 1938, lo Stato ungherese guidato da Miklós

Horthy varò una serie di misure contro gli ebrei, emulando le
Leggi di Nuremberg approvate in Germania. L’allora Cardinale
Pacelli, che sarebbe diventato Papa Pio XII, era a conoscenza
delle nuove legislazioni, ma mostrò tolleranza verso questa
forma di antisemitismo. Si mantenne infatti in buoni rapporti
con Miklós Horthy, ed ebbe anche un incontro con lui il 1
Maggio 1938, durante la sua visita in qualità di legato papale al
Congresso Eucarestico Internazionale, che ebbe luogo proprio
nella capitale ungherese Budapest. In tale occasione, Pio XII

dell’anno successivo, L’Ungheria approvava dure leggi
antisemite. Una di queste norme, varata il 5 maggio 1939,
definiva gli ebrei con connotazioni razziste, arrivando a negargli
il diritto di voto e la possibilità di intraprendere una carriera
all’interno del governo. Un’altra legge a carattere marcatamente
anti-ebreo comparve l’8 Agosto 1941, rendendo illegali i
matrimoni misti, e dichiarando sancibili penalmente i rapporti
sessuali tra ebrei e non ebrei.
All'inizio della guerra, il governo ungherese deportò in
Germania decine di migliaia di ebrei provenienti dai Carpazi e
dall’Ucraina (l’Ungheria aveva occupato questi territori il 14
maggio 1939). Intanto, nell’area adiacente Vojvodina, vale a
dire la parte della Jugoslavia occupata dall’Ungheria, gli ebrei
venivano massacrati, così come successe ai serbi di Novi Sad il
20 Gennaio 1942. Tuttavia lo sterminio di Novi Sad provocò

numerose proteste all’interno del Parlamento ungherese, così
l’Ammiraglio Horthy indì un’indagine nel 1943. In seguito,
alcuni ufficiali dell’esercito ungherese vennero processati e
condannati.
Nonostante ciò, la stragrande maggioranza degli ebrei ungheresi,
circa 750.000 persone, rimase al sicuro dai nazisti durante quel
periodo. Dunque, le condizioni di questa comunità erano
decisamente migliori rispetto ai fratelli che vivevano nei Paesi
europei sotto il controllo della Germania, dove la nascita dei
ghetti e le deportazioni erano ormai all’ordine del giorno.
Rimaneva comunque il fatto che l’Ungheria rappresentava un
fedele alleato della Germania all’inizio della guerra. Molti
soldati ungheresi combatterono fianco a fianco con l’esercito
tedesco sul fronte orientale contro i russi. Durante la Battaglia di
Stalingrado, la Seconda Armata ungherese subì delle terribili
perdite. A quel punto, a seguito della sconfitta dei nazisti a
Stalingrado, il vento cambiò, e l’opportunista leader dello Stato
Ungherese, Miklós Horthy, tentò di trovare un accordo con gli
Alleati. Egli si trovava dinanzi a una difficile scelta: combattere
accanto ai nazisti fino alla fine, o correre il rischio che il suo
Paese fosse occupato dalle truppe tedesche. Alla fine Horthy
decise di iniziare negoziazioni segrete con gli Americani.
Fu così che, fino alla primavera del 1944, il leader ungherese
riuscì a resistere alle pressioni della Germania, rifiutandosi di
dare il consenso alla deportazione degli ebrei verso i campi di
sterminio innalzati nella Polonia occupata. Il 18 marzo 1944,

Adolf Hitler convocò Horthy per una conferenza che si sarebbe
tenuta a Schloss Klessheim, un castello nei pressi di Salisburgo
in Austria; in questa sede, il Führer pretese maggiore
collaborazione da parte dello Stato ungherese. Allo stesso
tempo, Hitler lanciò la Operation Margarethe: le truppe
tedesche occuparono l’Ungheria il 19 Marzo 1944, al fine di
costringere Horthy all’obbedienza. In effetti, l’Ungheria venne
ridotta a un mero protettorato tedesco. L’SS-Brigadeführer
Edmund Veesenmayer venne nominato Reich plenipotenziario,
e iniziò subito i preparativi per l’imminente Olocausto
Ungherese.

L’Olocausto Ungherese
Mentre portava avanti le operazioni di guerra contro l’Unione
Sovietica, l’Ungheria aveva intrapreso le negoziazioni per
sancire un armistizio con Stati Uniti e Regno Unito. Tuttavia
Adolf Hitler aveva scoperto il tradimento. Come accennato in
precedenza, il 19 Marzo 1944 l’esercito tedesco aveva occupato
l’Ungheria. Horthy era stato costretto a sollevare il Primo
Ministro Miklós Kállay dal suo ufficio, e a formare un nuovo
governo guidato da Döme Sztójay; questo gabinetto includeva
anche personaggi noti per il loro antisemitismo estremo, come
László Endre e László Baky. Essi avrebbero dovuto occuparsi,
infatti, proprio del ‘problema ebraico’. L’SSObersturmbannführer
Adolf Eichmann giunse direttamente da
Mauthausen, sbarcando a Budapest con a seguito il suo
Einsatzkommando. Stabilitosi all’hotel Majestic, vicino al
quartier generale della polizia, avrebbe condotto un’operazione
descritta da lui stesso come ‘la deportazione di maggior
successo della sua intera carriera’.
Il 20 Marzo 1944 Adolf Eichmann tenne una riunione con i
rappresentati della comunità ebraica, per creare al suo interno un
Consiglio incaricato di redigere una lista di tutti i loro
possedimenti. Nove giorni dopo, venne imposto a tutti gli ebrei
di indossare al braccio una fascia gialla recante la Stella di
David. Inoltre, essi vennero trasferiti negli appositi ghetti, in

attesa di essere deportati. Dal 15 Maggio al 6 Luglio 1944, un
periodo inferiore a otto settimane, 437.402 ebrei ungheresi
vennero portati via con la forza, grazie a un totale di 147 viaggi
in treno; la maggior parte di essi finirà poi nelle camere a gas di
Auschwitz-Birkenau. I tedeschi, infatti, avevano provveduto a
impiantare i binari all’interno dei campi già nei giorni che
avevano preceduto questi avvenimenti, cosicché il lavoro di
sterminio avrebbe potuto procedere in maniera più efficiente. I
treni si fermavano con il loro carico umano lungo una grande
piattaforma all’interno del campo di Birkenau, in modo da
arrivare il più vicino possibile alle camere a gas. Il primo di
questi viaggi portò 4.000 ebrei a Auschwitz-Birkenau il 17
Maggio 1944, ma di essi sopravvissero soltanto 17 persone.
Nuovi viaggi seguirono il 18, 19 e 20 Maggio; durante questi
giorni arrivarono più di 16.000 ebrei ungheresi. Volendo
tracciare una media degli arrivi giornalieri, essa si aggirava
intorno alle 8.500 persone.
L’ebreo italiano Primo Levi, uno dei superstiti dell’Olocausto,
fu deportato ad Auschwitz nel Febbraio 1944. Nel suo libro dal
titolo Se questo è un uomo racconta dell’improvviso afflusso di
ebrei ungheresi al campo: “Durante tutta l’estate erano arrivati
trasporti dall’Ungheria; un prigioniero ogni due era ungherese.
L’ungherese era diventato, dopo l’yiddish, la seconda lingua del
campo”. Con l’arrivo di ogni treno, gli ufficiali delle SS
svolgevano delle selezioni, e alcuni degli uomini e delle donne
in grado di lavorare venivano ammessi nel campo.

Ciononostante, nel giro di poche settimane essi venivano
ugualmente uccisi con il gas e poi cremati.
Si arrivò al punto che i campi di sterminio non potevano più
sostenere l’ingente afflusso di ebrei ungheresi, mentre i forni
crematori riuscivano a malapena a occuparsi dei cadaveri in
arrivo. Tuttavia l’obiettivo di Eichmann era la totale distruzione
degli ebrei ungheresi. All’interno della sua autobiografia, Rudolf
Höss, Comandante delle SS ad Auschwitz, scrisse quanto
riportato di seguito riguardo la deportazione degli ebrei
ungheresi: “Seguendo gli ordini di Pohl, feci per tre volte visita
a Budapest, con lo scopo di redigere una stima del numero di
ebrei in buone condizioni di salute di cui ci si poteva attendere
l’arrivo. [...] Eichmann era totalmente ossessionato dalla sua
missione, ed era convinto che lo sterminio fosse un’azione
necessaria per salvare il popolo tedesco da futuri attacchi da
parte degli ebrei. Egli era inoltre contrario all’idea di selezionare
gli ebrei abili al lavoro dai trasporti che giungevano nel campo.
Secondo lui, ciò rappresentava una minaccia per il suo progetto,
che prevedeva una ‘soluzione definitiva’ volta a prevenire la
possibilità di evasioni di massa, o di qualsiasi altro evento che
avrebbe permesso la sopravvivenza degli ebrei. (…) Nell’estate
del 1944, giustiziammo circa 400.000 ebrei ungheresi solo ad
Auschwitz.”
In quel periodo, la stampa degli Alleati aveva un’idea piuttosto
precisa di ciò che stava accadendo agli ebrei deportati. Il New

York Times pubblicò il 4, 10 e 18 maggio dei report dettagliati
riguardanti lo sterminio degli ungheresi, ed ebrei di altre
nazionalità (infatti, in quel momento storico i carichi umani
arrivavano anche da Belgio, Paesi Bassi, Francia, Italia e
Grecia). Il 18 maggio il New York Times titolava ‘Violenti
attacchi contro gli ebrei in Ungheria’: “Si è concluso il primo
atto del programma di sterminio di massa ai danni degli ebrei in
Ungheria. 80.000 anime provenienti dalle province nei pressi dei
Carpazi sono ormai scomparse, mandate incontro al loro destino
nei campi di concentramento in Polonia.” L’articolo si conclude
con queste parole: “Rapporti ufficiali da fonti diplomatiche
neutrali a Budapest sottolineano che se non verranno prese
immediatamente misure drastiche per porre fine alla brutalità del
governo ungherese, 1.000.000 di ebrei ungheresi non avranno
scampo.”
