Source text - Finnish Jyväskylän yliopistokampus
Jyväskylän kaupunki on maastoltaan tyypillistä Järvi-Suomea lukuisine järvineen ja lampineen. Korkeuserot ovat melko suuria. Kaupungin keskusta sijoittuu Jyväsjärven ja Tuomiojärven väliselle kannakselle, jonka Jyväsharju jakaa selvästi kahtia siten, että rakentaminen on ohjautunut rantojen suuntaisiksi kortteliketjuiksi.
Jyväskylän yliopiston Seminaarinmäkeä pidetään kaupunkikuvallisesti yhtenäisimpänä ja kauneimpana yliopistoalueena maassamme. Alueen kulttuurihistoriallista arvoa lisää se, että sen rakennuksissa on nähtävissä koko oppilaitoksen historia, seminaarista yliopistoon.
Seminaarinmäen rakennukset jakautuvat kolmeen eri aikoina toteutettuun rakennusryhmään. Ensimmäisen rakennusryhmän muodostavat viisi seminaarirakennusta, toisen ja laajimman rakennusryhmän muodostavat 1950-luvulla toteutetut Alvar Aallon korkeakoulurakennukset, joihin liittyvät 60-luvun ylioppilastalo sekä 70-luvun liikuntatieteellisen tiedekunnan rakennus. Kolmannen, 1970-luvulla toteutuneen neljän yliopistorakennuksen ryhmän on suunnitellut arkkitehti Arto Sipinen. Neljäs rakennusryhmä on muodostumassa, suunnittelijana arkkitehti Ilmari Lahdelma.
Seminaarinmäki
Jyväskylän kansakoulunopettajaseminaari perustettiin vuonna 1863 ja sen ensimmäiset rakennukset rakennettiin 1879-83 Jyväskylän kaupungin ruutuasemakaavan ulkopuolelle arkkitehti Constantin Kiseleffin suunnittelemina. Männikköharjulle valmistui kuusi punatiilistä opetus- ja asuinrakennusta sekä kuusi puurakennusta. Näistä tyypillisistä 1800-luvun jälkipuolen rakennuksista on jäljellä viisi punatiilistä seminaarirakennusta sekä paja ja asuinrakennus. Vuonna 1895 alueelle rakennettiin puinen voimistelusali Ryhtilä arkkitehti Theodor Deckerin suunnittelemana ja 1905 Yrjö Blomstedtin suunnittelema kansallisromanttinen rapattu Villa Rana. Seminaarimäen puutarha ja puisto perustettiin 1879-81.
"URBS"
"Jyväskylän Kasvatusopillisen Korkeakoulun piirustuskilpailu" järjestettiin Seminaarialueen täydentämiseksi joulukuussa 1950. Kilpailuun kutsuttiin arkkitehdit Alvar Aalto, Aulis Blomstedt ja Aarne Ervi. Kilpailijoiden tuli laatia kokonaissuunnitelma korkeakoulun alueen käytöstä sekä suunnitella uudisrakennukset Kasvatusopillisen Korkeakoulun käyttöön. Alvar Aallon ehdotus "URBS" valittiin kilpailun voittajaksi sekä rakennushankkeen edelleen kehittämisen pohjaksi.
Kampus
Pääpiirustukset ja niihin liittyvä työselitys on päivätty 24.11.1951. Jyväskylän Kasvatusopillisen Korkeakoulun rakennuskokonaisuus, ns. Aallon kampus, rakennettiin pääosin kahdessa vaiheessa. Ensimmäisessä rakennusvaiheessa, joka aloitettiin1952, rakennettiin opiskelijoiden asuntolarakennus "Naatti" ja ruokalarakennus "Lyhty" ja "Lozzi" (1951-57), harjoituskoulu (1952-54) ja sen voimistelusalirakennus (1951-53) sekä lämpökeskus. Toisessa vaiheessa, joka alkoi 1954, rakennettiin päärakennus ja kirjasto (1954-56), opiskelijoiden voimistelusalirakennus (1951-55) sekä henkilökunnan asuintalo (1954-55).
Korkeakoulun uudisrakennukset vihittiin kokonaisuudessaan käyttöön 30.5.1959. Puutarhasuunnitelma istutuksineen toteutettiin 1960-61. Uimahalli vihittiin käyttöön 1.10.1955. Uimahallia on laajennettu vaiheittain Aallon toimiston suunnitelmien mukaan 1964, 1975 sekä 1989-91. Liikuntatieteellisen tiedekunnan rakennus ja terveysasema rakennettiin 1966-71.
"Jyväskylän yliopiston pohjoismainen kaksivaiheinen suunnittelukilpailu" julistettiin 1969. Kilpailun voitti Arto Sipisen ehdotus, jossa yliopiston toiminnat jaetaan kolmeen osaan, Seminaarimäkeen, Mattilanniemeen ja Ylistönrinteelle. Seminaarimäkeen rakennettiin Sipisen suunnitelmat neljä noppamaista uudisrakennusta: kirjasto 1974, hallintorakennus 1974, Athenaeum 1976 ja Musica 1976.
Normaalikoulun ala-asteen suunnittelusta järjestettiin vuonna 2000 kutsukilpailu, jonka voitti arkkitehtitoimisto Lahdelma & Mahlamäki oy, arkkitehti Ilmari Lahdelma. Rakennus valmistuu 2002. Alvar Aallon suunnitteleman ylioppilastalon laajentamisesta järjestettiin vuonna 2000 yleinen arkkitehtikilpailu, jonka myös voitti arkkitehtitoimisto Lahdelma & Mahlamäki.
Translation - English Jyväskylä University Campus
Jyväskylä’s urban landscape is typical of Finland’s lake district with innumerable stretches of water. There are marked differences in elevation. The city centre lies between Lake Jyväsjärvi and Lake Tuomiojärvi on an isthmus whose shorelines define Jyväsharju ridge. A string of blocks on either side of it follows the direction of the shorelines.
From a townscape standpoint Seminaarinmäki Hill ranks among the most uniform and attractive of Finland’s university campuses. Its cultural- historic standing is enhanced by the fact that the history of the institution as a whole can be traced from the earlier Teacher Training School buildings to the University buildings of today.
Seminarinmäki Hill underwent three construction phases. The first yielded five Teachers’ College buildings; the second and more extensive phase comprises Alvar Aalto’s university buildings in the 1950s, the 1960s Student Building and the 1970s Faculty of Sport & Health Sciences; a third four-building phase erected in the 1970s was designed by Arto Sipinen. A fourth building complex by the Architect Ilmari Lahdelma is under way.
Seminaarinmäki Hill
Jyväskylä’s Teacher Training School for elementary level teachers was founded in 1863. It was only in 1879-83 that the first buildings by Architect Constantin Kiseleff were erected. They did not match the city’s planning grid. Six teacher training school buildings and residences of red brick and six of wood were erected on Männikköharju ridge. Only five of these typically 19th century red-brick buildings, a workshop and a residence remain. Ryhtilä, a wood gymastics hall by Architect Theodor Decker, was built in 1895. The Villa Rana, rendered in the National Romantic style and designed by Architect Yrjö Blomstedt, dates from 1905. Seminaarinmäki park was landscaped from 1879-81.
"URBS"
A “Limited Architectural Competition for Additional Buildings” to complete the Seminaarinmäki area for the University’s Faculty of Education was announced in December 1950. Architects Alvar Aalto, Aulis Blomstedt and Aarne Ervi were selected to enter the competition. They were to draw up a comprehensive plan for the campus and to design new buildings for the Faculty of Education. Alvar Aalto’s entry "URBS" was declared the winner and became the basis for further development of the project.
The Aalto Campus
The official drawings and attached building specifications were dated 11.24.1951. The buildings for the University of Jyväskylä’s Faculty of Education – called the Aalto Campus – were erected for the most part in two phases. During the first phase begun in 1952, the Naatti Student Residence, Lyhty Auditorium and Lozzi Dining Hall (1951-57), a Teacher Training School (1952-54) and Gym (1951-53) and Heating Plant were built. In the next phase begun in 1954, the Main Building and Library (1954-56), the Student Gym (1951-55) and the Staff Residence (1954-55) were built.
The new university buildings were commissioned on 5.30.1959. Landscaping and planting followed in 1960-61. The Swimming Hall was commissioned on 10.1.1955. It was later expanded in phases after plans by Aalto’s office in 1964, 1975 and 1989-91. The Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences building and the Health Centre were built in 1966-71.
A ”Two-Phase Nordic Design Competition for the University of Jyväskylä" was announced in 1969. Arto Sipinen’s entry was the winner. He divided university functions into three and allocated them to Seminaarinmäki, Mattilanniemi and Ylistönrinne. Four new, cube-shaped buildings were added to Seminaarinmäki: a Library and Administrative Building (1974), an Athenaeum and a Department of Music (1976).
In 2000, an invited competition for the design of the elementary level Teacher Training School was announced, won by Lahdelma & Mahlamäki Architects. The building will be completed in 2002. An open competition to expand the Student House designed by Alvar Aalto took place in 2000. Again the winner was Lahdelma & Mahlamäki Architects.
