Source text - English Students who have been identified to receive English for Speakers of Other Languages/High Intensity Language Training (ESOL/HILT) instruction and/or support, or whose score on annual English language proficiency tests indicate eligibility for services, may be provided certain accommodations during testing. These accommodations are intended to provide English language learners with an equal opportunity to demonstrate what they know and can do.
Students who have a WIDA composite score of 3.5 (grades 3-5) or 3.3 (grades 6-8) or lower have the option of completing the Virginia Grade Level Alternative (VGLA) rather than taking the Reading SOL test in the spring. The VGLA is a collection of student work that demonstrates proficiency in the Reading Standards of Learning. Teachers are responsible for collecting and organizing evidence for each student throughout the school year. Students may take the VGLA for no more than 3 years. These students may also take a Plain English Math SOL test instead of the regular SOL Math test for no more than 3 years.
A committee met to determine how your child would participate in the testing scheduled for this spring. Attached to this letter is a form that shows you what the committee decided.
