November 1231.
Papst Gregor IX. spricht Elisabeth am 12. Mai 1235 in Perugia heilig.
| Översättning - Engelska She is undoubtedly one of the most popular figures from the German Middle Ages. In 1207 Elizabeth is born a Hungarian princess, probably in Sarospatak in northern Hungary. Her father is King Andreas II (1177-1235), while her mother Gertrud (1185-1213) comes from Germany.
In 1211 the four-year-old Elizabeth arrives at the castle of the Wartburg near Eisenach and is engaged to the eldest son of Landgrave Hermann I of Thuringia. In 1221 Elizabeth marries Ludwig IV, the marriage is a happy one, and Elizabeth gives birth to three children.
Impressed by the followers of Franz of Assisi, Elizabeth helps found a Franciscan monastery in Eisenach in 1225. Thenceforth she seeks to observe the ideals of the order and carry out her “works of mercy”. In 1226 Elizabeth selects the crusade preacher Conrad of Marburg to be her spiritual instructor and gives an oath of obedience. From then on, she leads her life according to Conrad’s strict rules of penance.
The same year finds a famine ravaging the countryside. Elizabeth distributes the landgrave’s reserves to the poor, has a hospital erected below the Wartburg and helps attend to the sick and leprous. She criticizes the life at court and deliberately takes the side of the poor.
In 1227 Ludwig IV dies on the way to a crusade. The young dowager who has just given birth to her third child leaves the Wartburg. After spending a short time in Eisenach, she goes to Marburg, the homeland of her spiritual instructor. There she has a hospital built in 1228 and sacrifices her life to work. Exhausted and haggard, Elizabeth dies on November 17, 1231.
On May 12, 1235, Pope Gregory IX canonizes Elizabeth in Perugia. This canonization is also solemnly proclaimed that very year in the Cathedral at Erfurt. It is presumed that Elizabeth made some pilgrimages to the city during her lifetime and visited the present-day Ursuline Convent (Ursulinenkloster). Dietrich of Apolda (1220/30 – 1302/3), a member of the Dominican Monastery in Erfurt since 1247, records the Elizabeth Vita (Life of Elizabeth) in 1289/90, which for many years is the authoritative work on her life. In the story Dietrich includes, among others, countless novelistic episodes about Elizabeth and Ludwig IV of Thuringia. The popular work enjoys great popularity immediately.
| | Ryska till Engelska: Voskoboev and Elizaveta by Andrey Dmitriev - Poesi & Litteratur | Källtext - Ryska | Översättning - Engelska Captain Voskoboev had not attempted to do any work since waking up. He sat sideways on the narrow windowsill and smoked. The azure arrangement of their apartment did not thrill the captain. The happy motif warbling in his wife’s throat irritated him like the noise of the water in the defective sink. The edges of his lips quivering ill at ease, Voskoboev looked into the courtyard: a chimney for the new boiler room blackened the sky there, and clumps of piled-up anthracite gleamed dully. Next to the pile, a young worker from the building maintenance office squatted and nailed together a children’s sandbox. His hammer came down heavily and dully like ones heart in an hour of agitation and insufficient sleep. The sound of the hammer pleased the worker: with great satisfaction he went on hammering and hammering as long as he did not hammer into the very vulnerable depths of Voskoboev’s frayed soul... | | Ryska till Engelska: The Black Pelican by Vadim Babenko - Poesi & Litteratur | Källtext - Ryska | Översättning - Engelska To this day I remember the long road to the town of M. It dragged on and on, while the thoughts plaguing me mingled with the scenes along the way. It seemed as if my surroundings were already at one with the town itself, although I still had a few hours to go. I passed obscure farms in empty fields, small villages and lonely estates surrounded by cultivated greenery and forest hills. Man-made ponds and natural lakes skirted the road and reeked like wetlands, which later, right before the town of M., turned into peat bogs and wasteland, with no sign of life for miles to come. The countryside was dotted with humble towns sprouting out of the land, the highway briefly becoming their main street: squares and clusters of stores gleamed in the sun, banks and churches rose up closer to the center, the belfry whizzed by, silent as usual. Then again the glint of the stores and gas stations at the outskirts said farewell without a word, and just like that, it was over. The town was gone, without having time to agitate or interest you. Again the road wound its way through the fields, its monotony wearing you down. I saw the strange people that swarm over the countryside – for a fleeting moment they appear amusing, but then you measure them against their surroundings and stop noticing them, understanding how unexceptional they are. Sometimes people waved to me from the curb or just followed me with their eyes, though more often than not, nobody was distracted by my fleeting presence. Left behind, they merged with the streets, as they withdrew to the side. |
