I tried, and all the Google links with proz and "reliable and punctual" just turned up Rebecca.
The profile in question is very much alive and kicking. Try googling a different bit - any of the first paragraph of the "my specialist subjects" section that isn't in blue should do it. What's even more annoying is that, in some cases, the other profile's Google rating is higher than my own!

I remember a case where the whole keywords area was copied, apparently without even checking: it included items in languages the copycat didn't work with, as well as the domain name of the original profile's owner
The keywords area has been changed. So at least *some* effort at originality has been made!
I have submitted a support ticket so we'll see what the site staff advise.
I run several searches in different ways, but he only thing that comes out is Rebbecca`s profile.
Maybe the felon has already changed his/her profile. | | | JaneTranslates Puerto Rico Local time: 12:08 Spanska till Engelska + ...

Hi Rebecca, why not just identify the offending party is? I've tried all the "recommended" searches and it's still unclear.

Hi
The thread would get censored if the person is identified. I kept on trying different searches and found it. It is not that difficult. I believe it is important that this thread does not get censored, because, thanks to it, the offender might change his profile. It might also discourage others from doing likewise.
Regards,

Hi Paula,
I didn't open this thread to name names as I thought that a) it would be censored and b) it would be unfair on the person involved.
However, the fact that others have, of their own free will, carried out a search and easily found the profile in question only serves to reinforce quite how alike our two profiles are.
Cheers!

Becky, after reading about your experience, I chose a short phrase from my own profile and plugged it into Google, never really expecting to find a match in anyone else's. Therefore, I was shocked to find it in not only one but two other profiles. One happens to work in my same language pair and has used the whole sentence, while the other has not only stolen the entire paragraph but has posted it on a couple other sites in addition to Proz! Both profiles were set up long after mine.

I, too, will be submitting a support ticket. Anyone who steals someone else's original text is guilty of plagiarism and should be dealt with accordingly.
Thanks for bringing this to our attention. ▲ Collapse | | | JaneTranslates Puerto Rico Local time: 12:08 Spanska till Engelska + ... I'm shocked. Better check my own profile! | Nov 4, 2006 |
Cindy, I've just searched with a single phrase from your profile and found three profiles. One, at least, is even more crass in its plagiarism than the one I found for Rebecca. Unbelievable!
However, what it means is that both of you are good writers. If someone is looking for help in writing a profile, any paraphrase they make of your work is going to sound feeble in comparison!

I'm afraid I didn't work very hard at my own profile -- I keep meaning to go back and improve it -- so it probably didn't attract any copycats. But I'm going to do some checking anyway. And if I should find any obvious copying, I will send a support ticket. I may also write to the person--I don't know.
I'm still flabbergasted that translators, of all people -- language specialists as we must be -- would be so foolish, as well as dishonest. Especially within the same language pair!

Angela Dickson (X) Storbritannien Local time: 16:08 Franska till Engelska + ... your plagiariser isn't very bright.... | Nov 4, 2006 |
he has copied your 'for further information click the "plus" sign at the top of my profile' but is using the old style of profile which has no "plus".
Not a very impressive way to introduce himself to the community. Shame, as it seems as though he might otherwise be a good translator.

I'm sorry that the same has happened to you, and twice!
I suspect that numerous other Proz users may find similar copycats throughout the site. I should ramdomly click on new user profiles more often, who knows what will turn up! | | | Check your websites as well | Nov 4, 2006 |
Thanks for putting this topic on the agenda, Becky!
After this happened to you, I couldn't resist to check up if there are any colleagues here on ProZ who has taken parts from my text, and voilà, I did find a translator who apparently thinks that copying text from other profile is proper behaviour. It's not much, but still really the same text. Let's see what this colleague says.

What's is really annoying me and really makes me crazy, however, is that Google also gave me clear evidence that another agency in Germany has actually copied parts of our proper business website at www.hansson.de . In some parts it's exactly the same text, even the same number of bullets and the text in the same order which shows that the plagiariser is not very inventive.
We have invested lots of time and effort into website (a project which took several months) but it was for our own business and not pretended to be some kind of template database for other agencies' websites.
We have written to this "agency" and demanded an explanation. Let's see what they will say. We might take legal steps.
Best regards

I found Rebecca's plagiariser by searching for "residence in Spain" + site:proz.com. Rebecca's site is the first hit, her imitator's is the fourth.
I imagine my profile is too bare to have attracted any copies - maybe I should flesh it out a bit!

Well, I didn't find the Korean one; one was English to Spanish, the other two were both Russian.
BTW, several of you have taught me something today. I thought the (only) proper form was "plagiarist," but I find that "plagiarizer" is also correct. Is there a difference?
Later: OK, found the Korean one. That's four. And I gave only the U.S. spelling of "plagiarizer"; there's also the U.K. "plagiariser."

no, you're right - it should be plagiarist, but it's Saturday evening and I'm on the wrong (or right!) side of the best part of a rather nice bottle of Italian wine... forgive me
