We have prepared some new interfaces for the jobs system.
The new job postings will have:
Three new job posting forms were created: “Translation/editing/proofing”, “Interpreting”, and “Potential jobs”. Each job posting form is now stricter in its requirements for identity information. Also, the three new job posting forms can be edited before a job has actually been vetted, but once a job has been posted to the public, it cannot be edited by the outsourcer... The new job postings will have:
Three new job posting forms were created: “Translation/editing/proofing”, “Interpreting”, and “Potential jobs”. Each job posting form is now stricter in its requirements for identity information. Also, the three new job posting forms can be edited before a job has actually been vetted, but once a job has been posted to the public, it cannot be edited by the outsourcer again. However, outsourcers will still have the option to make an addendum to their job posting if needed. Finally, when a quote is entered, a confirmation e-mail will be sent to the quoter.
The outsourcer's ID is now visible on the job listing, which provides easy access to the Blue Board and also tells moderators whether or not an outsourcer has already been added to the Blue Board. Furthermore, bidirectional links between job postings and the Blue Board have been developed to provide easier and quicker access.
The page that shows one's own previous quotes has been made cleaner. Outsourcer BB entries are also accessible from the page showing these quotes.

In order to make the job postings on ProZ consistently meaningful, informative and user-friendly, I am suggesting some additional features that I would like to see in the “Translation/editing/proofing” jobs area:
Compulsory Detailed Field
Outsourcers must choose at least one of the detailed fields for the job. These would be the same fields that are used in KudoZ and in the directory. See more In order to make the job postings on ProZ consistently meaningful, informative and user-friendly, I am suggesting some additional features that I would like to see in the “Translation/editing/proofing” jobs area:
Compulsory Detailed Field
Outsourcers must choose at least one of the detailed fields for the job. These would be the same fields that are used in KudoZ and in the directory. Because for some jobs several fields may apply, oursourcers should have the option to select more than one (maybe up to 4 or so).
Compulsory Text Category
Outsourcers must choose at least one "Text Category" (and can choose up to 3 or 4). This would be a selection from a predefined list of the most common text types. Examples: Manual, Contract, Letter, Brochure, Website, Report, Subtitles etc. My guess is that by predefining about 15 to 20 such text categories, 97% of the jobs posted on ProZ would be covered. For the remaining 3% there could be an "Other" category (and perhaps a text box to specify). By making it compulsory that outsourcers select a detailed field and a text category, we could ensure that the translator will have at least a general idea of what the job is really about, even without the outsourcer specifying further details.
Optional (but encouraged) Document Excerpt and/or Upload
Outsourcers should be urged to provide at least a representative excerpt of the text. (Of course that's not always feasible, but even "confidential" texts can often be anonymized and made generic.) They should also have the option to upload their document to ProZ, with a link to the document provided in the job posting. (Uploaded documents could be automatically deleted after a few days.)
Automatically Generated Headlines
The headline for the posting should be generated automatically based on the language pair, detailed field(s), and text category. The reason is that outsourcers far too frequently put redundant or irrelevant information into the headline — such as "German > English" (we know that already), "Job" (duh!), or "URGENT!!!" (what job isn't these days?) — while failing to mention what the translator really needs to know. Examples for automatically generated headlines:
Spanish > French | Contract | Law: Contract(s); Real Estate
Dutch > English | Website; Brochure | Tourism & Travel
German > English | Book | Education / Pedagogy; Mathematics & Statistics
I invite everybody to comment on my suggestions, and I'm sure the site operators are listening (so to speak).

Is it possible to come up with some way to reduce the number of discrepancies between deadlines in the headings 'Job description' and 'Delivery deadline' in the job postings.

I think it would be an excellent idea to include origin and destination countries or regions in job postings, since such factors are often important in worldwide languages such as English and Spanish (mine) and I'm sure it can even be pertinent information for many smaller but equally diverse languages as well. | | | Price setting per character, etc. not only per word, please | May 1, 2005 |

Norbert has come up with some very nice ideas that should be seriously taken into consideration.
I'd also like to see fieds such as "file format(s)" with a list of the most common file formats and the usual "other" entry. I do agree that a sample text is very helpful. The more information we have the better we can make our bids.

Why should they know everything about us from profiles and resumes while we don't know a thing about them? As for the new form for searching jobs, I found it even more useful than the previous one (which nevetherless was very good as well!).

Well, my proposals to staff are as follows: please place three additional lines in the form to be filled by an outsoucer:
1. The time after that bids will not be accepted (say "Bids accepted up to -----" - see also item 3.) and indication of time remaining (say "It remains _284_ hours before the close of bids' accepting", say as on EBay:)) This should work automatically and show "real time" - this makes easier calculations, etc.
2. Optional fields of the deadline of the job [not all agencies even know whether the client's dealine already exists; an alternative is to choose among the two/three options "strict deadline is xx.yy.zzz" and, say, "deadline has not yet been defined" or "suggested/possibe deadline is ______"]
3. Indication of the difference between outsourcer local time and GMT (in "bullets"!), e.g., Outsourcer time zone: GMT+X hours (and maybe also Pacific Time + Y hours).
The last item is useful for a better communication, etc.
I am sure for a serious outsourcer it will worth several second to send that additional info; however, a couple or triple lines will give to both the sides much more useful info.
PS. For "old" or say "veteran" outsourcers some "pre-made" forms can be provided (in order to economize their time) or a possibility to recall the filled form of the previous posting and to change only necessary fields (e.g., with personal/company data remaining same).
PPS. Can you provide also the following data (however, visible exclusively to the Platinum members!): the number of previous job offers/postings by that outsourcer and the date of its registry with ProZ.com?

Most of you may not have this problem. But it is getting harder and harder for us to post jobs/projects for some languages because some of the languages are not part of the proz list. I recommend expanding the language list a little bit more. If some one needs some recommendation I can give that suggestion | |
