Gift & present Sep 28, 2014

相比之下,New England 的秋景则更美,more beautiful than beautiful!

Yueyin,

我自己是没那个本事去将一语双关的英文单词翻成中文并且保留双重意思的。 不过具体到 "present" 这个词, 也许可以从 “现” 字 与 “献” 字 正巧同音上打打主意。

这玩艺儿, 我个人认为 用白话译可能更有周旋的余地。

The full quote often reads: "The clock is running. Make the most of today. Time waits for no man. Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift. That's why it is called the present."

In the 1902 book, "Sun Dials and Roses of Yesterday: Garden Delights..." by Alice Morse Earle, it is noted that the words "Time Waits for No Man" is a play on words or punning device of "gnomon" that has been used on sun dials. A gnomon is a pointer on a sun dial. Somewhere along the way came the full quote which has been truncated by some to your version.

http://books.google.com/books?id=puICAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA225&dq="time%20waits%20for%20no%20man"%20yesterday%20is%20history&as_brr=1&ei=vXRRR_eGJqC0pALbkfCfDw&ie=ISO-8859-1#v=onepage&q&f=false

Many believe the phrase has its root in "Time and Tide wait for No Man," meaning no one is so powerful that he can stop the march of time.

According to "The Phrase Finder":

The origin is uncertain, although it's clear that the phrase is ancient and that it predates modern English. The earliest known record is from St. Marher, 1225:

"And te tide and te time þat tu iboren were, schal beon iblescet."

A version in modern English -- "the tide abides for, tarrieth for no man, stays no man, tide nor time tarrieth no man" evolved into the present day version.

This spring morning in bed I’m lying,
Not to awake till birds are crying.

http://www.gushiwen.org/mingju_633.aspx
诗人惜墨如金,仅以一句“处处闻啼鸟”来表现充满活力的春晓景象。但人们由此可以知道就是这些鸟儿的欢鸣把懒睡中的诗人唤醒,可以想见此时屋外已是一片明媚的春光,可以体味到诗人对春天的赞美。

Learning from Shany Mar 12, 2017

https://www.douban.com/group/topic/97126897/

Mar 12, 2017

http://mp.weixin.qq.com/s/9zjq-q_FQ0rrT0HyYXzDeA

看到中央电视台介绍翻译大师许渊冲老先生的这段视频,不禁又想起了这篇译文:
http://gmluo.blog.163.com/blog/static/70583574201242082341522/

青春

青春不是年华,而是心境;
青春不是桃面、丹唇、柔膝,而是深沉的意志,恢宏的想象,炙热的恋情;
青春是生命的深泉在涌流。
青春气贯长虹,勇锐盖过怯弱,进取压倒苟安。
如此锐气,二十岁生而有之,六旬男子则更多见。
年岁有加,并非垂老。理想丢弃,方堕暮年。
岁月悠悠,衰微只及肌肤;
热忱抛却,颓废必致灵魂。
忧烦,惶恐,丧失自信,定使心灵扭曲,意气如灰。
无论年届花甲,拟或二八芳龄,心中皆有生命之欢乐,奇迹之诱惑,孩童般天真久盛不衰。
人人心中皆有一台天线,只要你从天上人间接受美好、希望、欢乐、勇气和力量的信号,你就青春永驻,风华常存。
一旦天线下降,锐气便被冰雪覆盖,玩世不恭、自暴自弃油然而生,即使年方二十,实已垂垂老矣;
然则只要竖起天线,捕捉乐观信号,你就有望在八十高龄告别尘寰时仍觉年轻。
